Saints Favourites To Sign Central Defender
Monday, 11th Jun 2018 23:26

Saints are the bookies favourites to sign Middlesbrough's Ben Gibson according to the bookies, and Leeds will be relieved.

According to various bookies the favourites to sign Ben Gibson are Southampton, of course this is a bit of a fun betting market, but it is influenced by insider sources and sudden surges in money being placed on a potential transfer.

Being a local lad and not to mention the nephew of the Chairman, Gibson remained loyal to Boro after their relegation in 2017, but although he was ever present for the North East side and got them to 5th place in the Championship, they failed in the play off semis and now Gibson feels its time to move on.

Saints are now 2/1 favourites to sign him, most of the other potential suitors both last summer and now this are no better bets for the player than moving to St Mary's and the whisper is that it will be his destination.

Thats good news for Leeds who have been expecting a Saints move for their central defender Pontus Jansson another name linked with a move to Saints in the last two transfer windows, but it seems that Gibson could be our number 1 target.

It is great that, for a change, we are being linked to a player who really would be a good signing. Ben Gibson is a hell of a lot better than Pontus Jansson who is more typical of the cr@p players like Carrillo and Hoedt that we have been signing lately.

I hope the bookies are right.

Ever noticed that the "bookies favourite" usually means the kiss of death for any deal.
It will end up like the Eurovision Song Contest with Saints signing a complete outsider who no-one ever rated and doesn't even have his own You Tube clip.

But as for the suggested deal for Gibson ..(?)...it may work out just as long as we can get him for less than £19 million as the impending "£20 million barrier " will be a curse on any new player who fails to DAJFU every game - after spending so much money on him.

The truth is that at Prem. level , that level of fee hardly warrants a mention when highly-rated teenagers and "bench reserves " in the BIG clubs will go for twice the amount.

So ...Gibson (?) - well why not. IF he's no worse than we have at present, and puts in a shift every week, we can be thankful for that and there is the hope that he may develop into a better player...score a goal at Anfield ...and set up a deal for a new club record fee.

Gibson isn't very good in my opinion and obviously in the opinions of most PL team manager/coaches otherwise why would he still be languishing in the Championship?

Signing him would be about as exciting as sipping coffee through a straw
