Saints Opener With Burnley Could Be Changed To The Sunday Thursday, 14th Jun 2018 13:27 It is highly unlikely to be selected for TV coverage, but Saints opening Premier League fixture against Burnley could still be moved to the Sunday anyway. Saints could be forced to postpone the opening game of the 2018/19 Premier League season due to Burnley's possible participation in the 3rd qualifying round of the Europa League. The first leg of that round is due to be played on Thursday August 9th meaning that their trip to St Mary's would be pushed back a day to the 13th August if they get through the 2nd qualifying round. The Clarets find out their opponents next Wednesday when the 2nd round draw is made and then it starts to get pretty hectic, they play the first game in the 2nd round on the 26th July followed by the 2nd leg a week later on the 2nd August. Burnley will already know their two possible opponents prior to the 2nd leg and if they win, they then play that game on Thursday 9th followed by the 2nd leg the week later. So this could mean that our season opener is pushed back a day, but we won't know this for sure till only 9 days before the fixture is due to be played, although we might have a good clue depending on the result of the first leg. Saints will be hoping that Burnley do win though as by the time they visit St Mary's they will have played 3 competitive games in the space of a little over 2 weeks which for a small squad the size of Burnley's will take a lot out of them and Saints would hope to capitalise on that.
