Another New Signing Imminent
Monday, 9th Jul 2018 14:40

Saints are about to announce the signing of Danish central defender Jannik Vestergaard from Borussia Monchengladbach.

According to various media reports Jannik Vestergaard has completed a medical and will be announced as the third major signing for Saints this evening.

Standing at 6ft 7 Vestergaard will add some much needed aerial power to the Saints back four and is also able to play as a holding defender in midfield.

Part of the Danish Worlds Cup squad although he didn't get on the pitch Vestergaard has made his name in the Bundesliga namely at Borussia Monchengladbach where he has starred for the last two seasons and previously at Werder Bremen and Hoffenheim.

Saints are said to be about to pay around 20 million euros for the plaster who turning 26 in a few weeks and nearly 200 Bundesliga games to his name as well as 16 Danish caps is ready to try and make the step up to the Premier League.

If he signs that will make five central defenders in the Saints squad with Hoed, Bednarek, Yoshida and Stephens already in situ, when the signing is announced it will be one central defender took many, expect to see one of either Yoshida or Stephens leaving, possibly initially on loan.

Either way its good to see Saints spending before they are selling.

This player fits the bill perfectly for what we have been lacking aerial power. I would think the player leaving will be Stephens as he is the worst of the bunch. Now all we need is a good tall CF.

Looks a good signing, but that cant be right because Les Reed doesn't do good signings and is at fault for all of our hires

Very good signing - completely agree Pete, height and aerial needed.
I'd like to see this given a go:
McCarthy
Cedric Yoshida Vestergaard Bertrand
Lemina Hojbjerg
Armstrong
Gabbiadini Elyounoussi
Austin

I'm not sure we will see one of our CB's sold - At the end of last season we played with 3 x CB's under Mark Hughes, so to have 5 in the squad means we have TWO backups... Sensible if you ask me.

He didn't star at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Their star central defender is Matthias Ginter. Vestergaard is painfully slow, which is why they are selling him. He is even slower than Hoedt. We seem to be accumulating the slowest central defenders in the Premier League. At least, Yoshida has a bit of pace and you can't defend against the top Premier forwards without pace.

we just got rid of a 19 million pound flop although I think he deserved a much better chance than he got and now were on the verge of signing this Danish cb who cant get into the Denmark team or play a regular game for Borussia but we still paid 18 million I've got to be missing something here our transfer policy has suddenly got even more unpredictable, there is gossip of a new young goalie coming as well does that mean we get rid of 3 keepers in one season taylor,Forster and lewis they cant all stay, its worth watching just to see what happens next coyr

I think we will keep all 5 cd's. This signing tells me that we will play a 3-4-2-1 formation. We haven't got a stand out central defender, there all much of a muchness There not good/confident enough to entrust just two in a game at the moment.

Insightful there 1970 - "[can't] play a regular game for Borussia" - how did you work that out based on the fact he's barely missed a game since signing for them two seasons ago. He's kept out of the Denmark starting eleven by Christensen and Kjaer (the former a world class CB and the latter both that and national captain).

Please be positive about this signing. Okay, he may be slow, but we don't currently lack pace in the squad, we lack aerial presence and that is exactly what he provides. Per Mertesacker was an excellent Premier League CB and he was even slower. I firmly believe Vestergaard will be an excellent signing for Saints in the long term. Give him time.

Angus Gunn I am HUGELY excited about - he will be Pickford's main challenger for many years to come. Now we need to find a way of shifting Forster (if we can find someone to take the burden of his astronomical wages).

@schatfield.. yes, you’re right les reed was to blame for signing Mane, pelle, VVD, Cedric, Bertrand, Lemina, gabbiadini, tadic, Forster, Lovren, Clyne, aldewiereld, wanyama... Man that guy really sucks at his job.

Quite right arthurfane. The third best Danish CB sounds alright to me - the Danes were pretty good in defence and a bit of height will do us no harm.

Only a month to go before it all starts again...

1 - Why do we even employee a head of recruitment if he is responsible for buying all t these wonderful players?
2 - He is most definitely responsible for selling most of them
3 - we didn't buy Aldewiereld, that was one of his finest cock ups. We had an clause that allowed us to buy him for 6.8m (!!!!!) we failed to exercise that at the time and as a result we didn't even the 1.5m we had agreed as compo with Athletico

Man that guy really sucks at his job.

Seriously Jesus_02? You really think not signing Alderweireld was OUR cock up? I'm sorry to break it to you, but a club the size of Saints just doesn't have the pulling power of one like Spurs. We may have had the clause (well inserted into the loan deal) but if the player doesn't want to sign for us then there's nothing we can do.

Toby gave us one excellent season, then wanted to return to Champions League football - who can blame him?
