What Would Nerw Keeper Signing Mean For Forster And McCarthy ?
Tuesday, 10th Jul 2018 16:00

With the signing of Angus Gunn from Manchester City looking imminent, it seems strange to pay so much for a young keeper with two experienced ones already on the books.

Angus Gunn is a strange signing for Saints,, with Alex McCarthy impressive at the end of the season and Fraser Forster hoping for a recall, why do Saints need a third keeper ?

At 22 Gunn has never played in the Premier League and indeed his only experience was last term on loan at his Father's old club Norwich City, at this stage of his development you would think that he would be looking for a chance of a regular game in the Premier League.

But Saints might well choose to loan him back out for a further season elsewhere, the could be buying for the future, at the moment they have just signed McCarthy up for a new deal and Forster has time left on his and it will be hard to move him on due to his wages.

But perhaps the club have doubts about McCarthy's ability to turn a short purple patch of games into a full season and beyond, they see him week in week out and it is hardly a vote of confidence in him to sign a keeper fro such a high price tag said to be £10 million down and a further £3.5 in add ons

It's a nice situation to have but at this time a puzzling one as to where Gunn will fit in the pecking order.

if we sign him for that amount, surely the club have found someone else to take on Forster....even if a free transfer

Unfortunately, Forster got found out once He never had a steady back line in front of him. unable to command his box, poor decisions on occasions, un-agile and pretty slow. there was a point last season where the opposing sides were just hitting low shots at him willy-nilly and most ended with goals. Thanks for the service but time to move on.

If they have doubts about McCartyy's ability then why give him a longer contract ?

Excellent signing! Let's hope he's our No. 1 for many years to come. A top goalkeeper is worth a lot of points over a season.

I'm excited about Gunn. A Norwich fan I know really rates him.
As for Forster, I'm afraid he's broken and needs a fresh start elsewhere. There are some elements of his game he needs to sort out (eg coming for crosses), and he can only sort those things through playing.

when frazer had good players in front of him he is a top top keeper but having yoshi who cant head the ball & stephens out of position at vital times no wonder he is allways picking up the tab

What Gunn's arrival should mean is the departure of FF - he is not good enough; his signing and contract extension in particular was a mistake.

i agree-strange (but good) signing-surely we'lll be sending him out on loan?

On a different note does anybody know what has happened to Les Reed?

Have the club sent him on a fake scouting expedition to Siberia for the World Cup he has always been in the signing photos with a grin on his face and always has a quote on any new signings made, up until this summer-could it be, has he been (hopefully!) moved aside?!!

Well, any club needs 3 keepers. Stuart Taylor has been released - Gunn in.
Why not settle with McCarthy, Gunn and Foster and NOT sell Forster? I know Forster is highly paid, but he is a good fellow and will be an important part of our 3 keepers set up. Forster is after all quite experienced. He can learn Gunn one or two things.
If Forster feels that the no. 1 place is two far away from him he can ask for a transfer in january.
With the signing of Eloinouissi and Armstrong AND beast central defender Jannik Vestergaard (with 150 matches in the Bundes league) I feel thinhs are looking pretty good. If we need to make another signing it woulf have to be a striker.

The "problem" - if you can call it that, is that we have too many keepers on the payroll, when you consider that we can only play one-at-a-time in the two senior sides.

Aside from the three keepers mentioned, we have extended a contract for U23 Jack Rose, who was very promising last season whilst we have Harry Lewis, who was loaned out to Dundee United last season quite successfully.

At the end of the day , i'd prefer to see us with an "extra" striker rather an extra keeper.
