With Danny Welbeck's future uncertain at Arsenal with new manager Unai Emery's summer spending, there are suggestions that Saints would be an ideal destination for him, we run the rule over the chances.

Would Danny Welbeck make a good signing for Saints ? that is the question being asked with the strikers future now very uncertain at Arsenal and a clear out in the offing from new manager Unai Emery.

Some Saints fans would dismiss Welbeck out of hand and point to the fact that he barely played in the World Cup in Russia as well as what is not exactly a successful spell with Arsenal whom he joined in the summer of 2014 for £16 million pounds.

Since then he has made 80 Premier League appearances for the Gunners scoring 15 goals, a strike ratio of a goal every 5.33 games, that is not great, 7 games per goal, but there are mitigating circumstances including injuries and last season he had perhaps his best season in Arsenal colours scoring 5 goals in 28 Premier League games and when adding cup games scored 10 times in 43 appearances overall.

That is suggesting that Welbeck who is reaching his peak turning 28 in November might have something to offer, it won't be with one of the big six though so he will be having to look further down the table for a new club and Saints could appear a good fit.

We need new attacking power and Welbeck for all his faults offers a direct and pacy option albeit a raw one , that being the case if he is available at the right price then he could be a good option.

Our strikers last season struggled, Charlie Austin has spent more time injured than fit in his time here, but has still been leading scorer and that tells us something Gabbiadini does not seem to fit the team's tactical set up at least under Puel and Pellegrino and Shane Long is more of a battering ram and provider than a scorer.

So a cheeky bid for Welbeck could be good business for Saints, he has experience at both Premier League and International level and is a known quantity, a 7 goal a season ratio is not great, but it is not not far off double figures and these days very few Premier League strikers actually get over 10 goals in a season, if played regularly in the right team Welbeck is capable of 12 goals a season and that would be a good total.

So what do you think ? Good signing or not worth the effort.

halftimeorange added 16:30 - Jul 20 Welbeck fits most of Saints outstanding requirement. He's strong and quick, can hold the ball up, bags a few goals and is generally unassuming. The way Kane and Lingard petered out in the recent world cup made me wonder why he wasn't given more time. There aren't too many around at the moment who can meet our needs at what might be an affordable price. It will be criminal if Saints do not buy such a player this window after all the other promising signings. Why leave one knot undone.

underweststand added 06:25 - Jul 21 I have to put Welbeck in the same category as Ings and Sturridge. They were good when quite young and found a role in a team where they added "something" until injured. Getting a "sicknote" tag isn't fun for the player, or the club who have to pay his salary. Even if considered "fit to play" they may never recover the form they once had and their names will be bandied around in the hope that some club may take them. To my mind none of these players are likely to revitalise a club with poor goalscoring record, of whom there are many at this level. For their sakes I'd love to be proven wrong, but Saints can surely find better options elsewhere.

TeamCortese added 08:24 - Jul 21 Welbeck is the perfect replacement for Shane Long. We should buy him. I don't put him in the same mould as Daniel Sturridge. I think Arsenal just have really poor medical staff that should have been sacked years ago. When he was at Man Utd he never really got injured. Moreover, we need to go for an established striker that will get us 20+ goals a season as well as creative attacking midfielder that can unlock defences in the same vein as a Christian Eriksen chipping in assists and goals. We should spend the money required and see both signings as investments in consolidating our place in the top 8 and subsequently Europa League!

underweststand added 13:09 - Jul 21 to Team Cortese.. The idea of an ordinary Prem. striker getting 20 goals a season is a thing of the past. Aside from Kane and Salah very few even can get near that level with any regularity. Many Prem. sides they are lucky to have one striker who gets into double figures. Welbeck benefitted playing alongside Rooney and did well as a second striker at MU. Rashford and Lingard are going through a similar phase playing second fiddle to Lukaku, but without that sort of partner, they tend to fade a bit. Deli Alli benefits from playing the double role with Kane, but I don't see him as mainstream striker without HK. YES.. we need to replace Shane Long in the near future, but I don't see Welbeck in that role even if he stays fit he doesn't have Long's pace and trickery. If Saints were to sign him, it'd be a lot of money (and salary) for a player who still needs to prove himself and regain anything approaching his original form.

There is no way he is on less than 100 K per week which would be considerably more than any of our players. Break the wage structure and everybody will want to be on the same rate. Sign him and all the first team players are knocking on asking for an extra 30-40 thousand a week extra

KriSaint added 22:31 - Jul 21 Decent all-round striker with experience. Nothing spectacular about him and too many injuries during his time with Arsenal. It has to be a good price from our point of view, otherwise no thank You. If we can get him for maximum 16 mill. pounds, I say BUY.
