Saints Being Linked With All And Sundry But Will Any Get Over The Line
Thursday, 9th Aug 2018 10:36

Saints are being linked with around half a dozen possible transfer targets, but by 5pm this evening will any of them actually be Saints players.

The media are carrying quite a few reports about Saints doing business for around half a dozen players on the final day of the transfer window, but in a few hours we will know a little bit more about how much water these rumours actually hold and more importantly if any of the names mentioned have signed on the dotted line !

First up is Danny Ings, reports suggest that neither Saints or Crystal Palace have met Liverpool's £20 million valuation of the player, but Ings prefers a return to his home town and to join Saints, question is whether Liverpool will accept a lower bid and if Saints match anything Palace offer.

Second is another Danny, this time Welbeck, this one has gone a little quiet but is still out there in rumour mill land it could be a late surprise.

Paco Alcacer of Barcelona is also on the radar probably as a loan deal, but again this has gone quiet again today.

A shock name in the frame is Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham who scored 5 times last season in the Premier League on loan at Swansea, however he is said to be in Chelsea's plans going forward so would likely only be a loan move.

Attracting attention though is a rumoured bid for Valencia right back Martin Montoya a player who although he has pedigree was in and out of the Valencia side last season, but he would be good back up to Cedric Soares and possibly suggests that Saints are looking ahead a little and that Cedric's time at the club may be coming to an end.

Saints scouts were also at Benfica V Fenerbahce on Tuesday night although it was unclear who they were watching and whether it was about a late target or someone for the future.

In regards to outgoing, two rumoured departues in Cedric and Lemina look set to stay, less sure is Matt Targett with Fulham seemingly desperate to land him and Saints keen to hold on to him by quoting silly money, this one could go either way.

Likewise James Ward Prowse who again is attracting a lot of press about Watford's interest in him.

Saints are telling the World that although they are prepared to make a move if necessary, that they are expecting a quiet window, perhaps that means they have one or two in mind but are keeping their cards close to their chest.

Most Saints fans seem to be desperate for a striker and would be happy with Ing's, Welbeck of Alcacer, but will it happen.

I would be very surprised if we actually brought a striker. It does not seem to be a priority for the club, even though it is for the fans. If we did though,, I would prefer Welbeck. I like Ings, but we already have a player in Austin with a bad injury record. I would see Alcacar as a Long replacement. I also see Montoya as a Pied replacement. So, Welbeck, Alcacar and Montoya would be very welcome, but unlikely.

I agree with davenbennett, but can’t see us signing three players without shipping some high earners out first, which won’t happen today. I think we’ll only pick up Montoya if we let Targett go. I’d be ecstatic to pick up Alacer, preferably as a loan with an option to buy. But to be honest, I’m happy that most of our business was completed early in the window.

I still feel a bit mixed. I’m pleased that we made some signings early, but I still can’t see us improving on last season without another striker, preferably in the mould of Lambo or Pelle. I’ll keep banging that drum even if the board are wearing ear-plugs. The only potential difference I can see this season is that we have a better coach now and hopefully he can link the forward men with the rest of the team, probably by going more direct. I’d love to see more balls over the top for Gabbi and Long to get onto and for JWP and the wing backs to get the ball into Austin to attack in the box. I just feel with a hold-up striker we’d be able to retain possession further up the pitch. I cannot handle another season of tippy-tappy passing sideways and backwards. I’m not advocating a big punt up the pitch, but the only team that can pull off this style is Barcelona. They can pass all day long because they have world class front men. We huff and we puff and we give the ball back. Please let’s not have another season like that.
