Hasenhuttl Looking To Build Squad That Suits His Philosophy
Thursday, 3rd Jan 2019 12:57

Ralph Hasenhuttl has spoken of how he is looking to build a squad that can play the way he wants, that means some will go and some will come in.

The Austrian has confirmed that Saints are not simply looking to reduce their squad but are looking to build on what they have to create a playing roster that suits the styles that he may want to play given the opposition and situations that may arrive.

Hasenhuttl knows though that the squad is too big and that some must be shipped out to make room as well as provide transfer funds and money in the wage budget to pay for them.

The departure of Steven Davis will provide little if any transfer fee, but it will be £60,000 a week off the wage bill and modern football is not just about being able to afford the transfer fee but the salary's as well.

Manolo Gabbiadini is one set to move as Hasenhuttl confirmed.

I know there is few interested in him," Hasenhuttl said of Gabbiadini. "The fact is our squad at the moment is too big and we have to sell players and he is one other clubs are interested in. In the next few weeks or days it could happen."

"For my kind of football, for my philosophy, I need more speed, I need more running quality, and therefore we will need new players.

"What we do now is [make] the big squad get a little bit smaller and then we will have a look if we find someone who helps us to move our deficits away."

"We are open-minded and our eyes are open so we know in the winter period it is not so easy to find transfers.

"If we do something it must also be for the future, it doesn't help us if we have a short term we are facing, we have to have a longer-term [plan].

"It should be a player who is not too old but fits perfectly in our philosophy and then it can be possible that we do something."

Hasenhuttl is quite rightly playing his cards close to his chest, but it is good that he is telling the fans that there is a plan, there is a philosophy, showing them a way forward, sowing them that the club will invest in the playing squad when the time is right.

Since Ronald Koeman we ave not had a manager that has done that and the club's PR has been abysmal, now it seems that has changed.

It’s encouraging to hear we’re going to trim some of the deadwood and bring in some fresh blood. I think we have a number of players that aren’t up to same quality that we’ve come to expect under Poch/Koeman. I like the idea of embedding youth and energy back into our game. Ralph is certainly not afraid to give the youngsters a go.

A much needed shake up to give the whole club new (old) direction and drive.

Well, thankfully, that knocks the Skrtel signing rumour firmly on the head.

I think most saints are really encouraged by what we’ve seen so far.Great results against arse & Chelsea with the defeat at home to west ham the only real disappointment. To me Austin & long don’t have enough about them in terms of quality & speed respectively.Danny Ings has got much more about him but personally I’m not sure if he’s 100% fit .its great that Ralph’s got a plan but I feel this season is all about staying up after Hughes and anything beyond that is a bonus. Again yesterday it was good to have a team to be proud of in terms of commitment & passion if not attacking flair

Given they’ve hardly been seen the last few weeks does that mean Hoedt, Soares and Lemina are also on their way out? Bertrand absence been explained by back injury but he can cover third centre back in a back three if required as he did under Koeman. Is Sam G still injured as would have thought he suited the new style.

No reason to doubt that Bertrand, Cedric & Lemina are still feeling the effects of long term injuries. As we saw the other evening with Lemina and as we saw last night with Cedric (it seems to be an on-going situation with Ings) bringing back players too soon however attractive that may seem on paper might actually aggravate healing tissues and delay their recoveries to fully fit status.

He wants young players with good engines and some speed.
I heard that Hesketh has come back from Burton, but with some kind of injury, unfortunately.
Callum Slattery has come up from the U23´s and was on the bench vs Chelsea. This means we already have these five ´new` 1. team players, all from our academy:
Valery, Ramsay, Obafemi, Tyreke Johnson and Hesketh.
If we buy 1 or 2 proven high-level players and sell Davis, Gabbi, Hoedt, Forster and maybe get Carrillo back from his loan at Leganes, I hope we have the squad that can make us keep our premiership membership.
