Steven Davis Thanks Saints Fans
Sunday, 6th Jan 2019 22:25

Possibly our best signing pound for pound since we returned to the Premier League, Steven Davis has issued a message to all Saints supporters after joining Rangers on loan for the remainder of his contract at St Mary's.

Steven Davis should be considered a Southampton FC legend, that title is bandied around a lot these days but Davis has played 226 games for the club in his 6 1/2 year stay and in that time made a major contribution.

He could be compared to Nick Holmes in that he was the unsung hero of a team that had several players that made the headlines, but didn't play as many games or make the long term contribution.

In Captaining the club at Wembley in March 2017, he became only the fourth Saints player ever to lead the team out in a major cup final in the modern era and thats is an achievement.

He joins the club he left for Saints and a return to Rangers in Scotland on loan for the rest of the season when he will become a free agent.

This will be a deal that suits all parties, Saints will get his salary off the wage bill therefore allowing potential to sign players this January, the cost of a player is not just about transfer fee.

Davis himself will probably get his full salary paid by Rangers till his contract ends in the summer and the Scottish club will be able to have the player to the end of the season without the commitment of a long term deal that could cost them dearly if he gets injured or it doesn't work out.

So thank you Steven Davis, you have been a credit to yourself and Southampton Football Club, you were a leader on the field that has not been replaced in the last year after your appearances were restricted by injury, every club has a player who never really gets the headlines but is just there week in week out putting in a shift and is solid, for us since 2012 that man was Steven Davis.

So thank you Steven and good luck for the rest of the season.

The man himself has issued the following statement to Saints supporters.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for making my time at the club so special.

There have been ups and downs, but since the day I arrived I have given my all to play my part in pushing this club forward.

It has been an honour to captain the club and lead the team out in a cup final at Wembley, achieve four successive top-eight finishes and be part of the club playing back in Europe.

TO THE FANS I MUST SAY THANK YOU FOR YOUR WONDERFUL SUPPORT. I WILL ALWAYS TREASURE IT.

The last couple of years have been more challenging, but I believe the management and quality within the dressing room can bring success back.

There are too many people to thank individually, but to the fans I must say thank you for your wonderful support. I will always treasure it.

I have been lucky to work under some fantastic managers and share the pitch with a host of top players during my time with the club, and I have met incredible people who will be life-long friends.

Southampton Football Club has taught me a lot that I will take into the rest of my career and life. I look forward to the new challenges ahead and wish everyone associated with the club success in the future."

I fully agree with all of this. Good luck to him in the future. The two goals at White Hart Lane stand out for me.

You’re a class act Steven (more than can be said of a few others).I don’t think it’s too much to use the term “club legend”. The standout memories for me were the Spurs’ game mentioned by SanMarco and our opening game back in the Premiership versus Man C. All the best Steven and thanks.

So when we are almost certain to be involved in a relegation scrap we let a midfielder with bucket loads of experience leave.I assume just to reduce the wages bill. Even when taking his age into account he is still worth two of JWP to name but one of our current squad of serial under achievers.

Having said the above I wish him well for the future. He gives me the impression of being a gentleman footballer when compared to the likes of the idiot who's face adorns most of the newspapers front pages this morning.

Even the first few posts on here sum up all that most of us could say, and with his departure Steven takes a very special record with him.

Since joining the club in 2012, he has been capped 56 times by Northern Ireland which makes him the most-capped Saints player of all time.
(This honour previously held by Peter Shilton who won 49 caps whilst with Saints).

Time is a merciless competitor. How quickly today's heroes become tomorrow's forgotten men.

I'm waiting for the day when Ward Prowse thanks us all on his way out to Newport County.

I will never ever forget the chorus of groans that goes up for the stands every time the announcer reads out the team sheet... No16 James Ward-Prowse
