Saints Take A Step Nearer Safety Without Playing Wednesday, 3rd Apr 2019 21:47 All the Wednesday evening results went as expected meaning Saints are another step closer towards avoiding relegation.
Manchester City cruised to victory against Cardiff, it could easily have been five or six or even more as the home side dominated from start to finish but some good goalkeeping by the Cardiff keeper and a City attack who wanted to walk the ball into the net and showboated meant that a goal at the start and end of the first half left City in charge, but even with a total of 80% possession and 27 shots they couldn't make it three.
Spurs cruised to victory in the first game in their new stadium 2-0 with most of the possession and were rarely troubled in a result that keeps Palace only three points ahead of us and still catchable as we have a game in hand although that one is Liverpool.
Chelsea let us down though, 3-0 up after the hour mark and totally dominant they failed to get the 4th goal that would have seen us go above Brighton on goals scored, however it makes it a little easier for us to overtake the Seagulls in the final run in.
Main thing of the night though is Cardiff losing, although like on Sunday against Chelsea it was a game they should have lost, it still leaves us five points in front of them and they are running out of games to make up the gap.
Their next two games are now do or die facing Burnley away on the 13th and then Brighton away three days later, if they were to lose both of those it would be nearly game over and they would be only able to get a maximum of 40 points, given that their last four games would then be Liverpool at home and then Fulham away, Palace at home and then Man Utd away to finish, the game could be almost up for them by mid April.
Our job now is to get a few more extra points on the table to make that gap insurmountable.

It's not over until it is over. We aren't safe until we are safe. Assume nothing and don't crow. Concentrate on ourselves and do the right thing and let the rest take care of themselves. There are numerous reasons why a win on Friday would top the season - a huge step to safety and putting a spoke in Liverpool's march to the title.

Our game is hand is actually the away trip to Watford. The Liverpool game is part of this weekend"s fixtures, but has been moved to the Friday night for Sky.

I have to admit that beating Liverpool on friday would be sweeter than ever because of recent years team-destroying player transfers to them. In this particular match in the forth coming final run-in we shouldn´t feel too much under pressure - on the contrary - after Fulham lost (and were relegated) and Cardiff and Brighton (and Palace) lost - while we ourselves have back to back wins. I hope this will be a huge advantage for us, as will hopefully the desire to beat the team that above any other team broke up our team core. And upset their title hopes. This is an excellent chance to pay back to Klopp who brought Lallana and Lovren on the pitch against us at Saint Mary´s last season - ONLY to upset us fans.

I read it the same way Nick, very hard to see Cardiff recovering their morale now which is probably really low after 5 defeats from their last 6. Football is mostly in the heads of the players not on the pitch.

I would argue that we are already safe now. Can only see Cardiff getting 5 more points max. I think we can now aim for 12th.

Agreed completely with KriSaint- I have followed a lot of different sports over very many years, and have never seen such a nasty, spiteful gesture to the opposition fans as the Scouse using subs to put all 5 of our ex-players on the field in the final minutes of a game they were winning. (Of course, in some sports, the response to something like that would be to go after their best player so no team would even think of doing it!). What really angers me is that the media never called attention to their darling's blatant unsportsmanslike conduct. Others would not get away with it. So it would be nice to get points from this game not only to help ourselves, but even better, it will destroy their league chances! As Southampton's Benny Hill said while standing in a cannibal cooking pot, and told he was going to be eaten, "Well at least I just ruined their gravy!"

Said before it’s a straight dog fight between us and Cardiff. So far so good we have two games in hand but we are not safe until the maths say so. Would be a mistake to assume otherwise. It in our hands so let’s get the job done as soon as.

I think A1079 has nailed it - don't go the early crow until averting relegation is certain; and at the moment it isn't!

Blogs 31 bloggersKnees-up Mother Brown #19 by wessex_exile February, and the U’s enter the most pivotal month of the season. Six games in just four weeks, with four of them against sides also in the bottom six. By March we should be either well clear of danger, or even deeper in the sh*t. With Danny Cowley’s U’s still unbeaten, and looking stronger game on game, I’m sure it’ll be the former, but first we have to do our bit to consign Steve ‘Sour Grapes’ Cotterill’s FGR back to non-league. After our shambolic 5-0 defeat at New Lawn, nothing would give me greater pleasure, even if it meant losing one of my closest awaydays in the process. What’s the excuse going to be today Steve – shocking pitch, faking head injuries, Mexican banditry or some other bit of sour-grapery bullsh*t? Southampton Polls |
