Will Klarer Be The Next To Break Through
Thursday, 11th Apr 2019 12:29

Southampton Football Club was delighted to announce that 18-year-old defender Christoph Klarer had signed a two-year contract extension, will he be the next to breakthrough ?

Central defender Christoph Klarer has put pen to paper on a contract extension that will tie him to the club till June 2021, last season the Austrian was U18's team captain and this year has featured heavily in the U23's team despite not due to turn 19 till June.

Standing around 6ft 3 he has been a towering presence and the feeling around St Mary's is he could be the next to make the transition to the First Team, although tht is not likely to be till next season now, if Saints were to be safe with games to spare it would not be a surprise to see him appear in the final fixtures.

The only real issue would be that if he were to break through it would be a very inexperienced defence, although it is likely that Saints will be looking to make a good central defensive signing in the summer and then back him up with Vestergaard, Bednarek and one other whether Ralph Hasenhuttl would feel that could be Klarer is another matter, certainly though another incoming defender would spell the end for not only Wesley Hoedt who is out on loan, but at least one of Jack Stephens and Maya Yoshida.

Klarer has appeared for his country at U19 level and joined Saints academy from Rapid Wien in July 2016.

Good report Nick, until the very end. Yes ,we will probably have too many centre backs if Klarer becomes part of the first team squad. But why ,as usual, are you picking on Yoshida to be
one of the ones to leave.Your dislike for him never seems to waver and you have to have a dig at him at every opportunity.

Klarer looked a good prospect when he came as a 16 y.o. and during Alfie Jones' loan-out to St.Mirren he moved almost seamlessly upto the U23s, which speaks volumes for his potential, and whilst still only 18 ... he doesn't look out of place at the higher level.

Having said that he has a way to go to nail down a place in the first team squad, let alone challenge for a first team spot. Not an easy task - as Jack Stephens can testify.
Jack really was a "piece of work" when he was a regular CB in the 23s, and DAJFU after VvD's injury / departure but a regular spot at the top level still eludes him.

At present I'm waiting to see if Bednarek or Vestergaard becomes "the new van Dyke"
but with the likelihood of seeing Hoedt move on to fresh pastures in the summer, Klarer may find himself on the bench now and again - if his form continues to improve.
