Carrillo Rejoins Club
Sunday, 1st Sep 2019 15:41

Guido Carrillo has rejoined CD Leganes on a season long loan on the eve of the European Transfer window closing.

Guido Carrillo has become the forgotten man of Southampton FC, in fairness although his transfer back in January 2018 was a panic buy, he was not as bad as some would have you believe and the players who surrounded him back then were no better and in some cases worse, that did not help his cause.

He spent the whole of last term with CD Leganes and he will again spend this season on loan with them.

From a Saints viewpoint they aren't recouping any of the transfer money, but at least they will be getting some, hopefully most of his wages off the bill.

This is good news and now we have to wait and see whether the squad can be trimmed further in the next day.

Agreed, it isn’t good news relatively speaking - it would be interesting to know how much of his wages we are still paying and how much we paid last season. Leganes have basically signed a player Off us on a two year contract, with us still paying (probably quite a significant) portion of his wages and he is still our player!

If any signing has ever illustrated the absolutely awful recruitment at our club over the past three or so seasons it would have to be Carrillo. Good luck to him, hope it works out for him

*should read “it IS good news relatively speaking”, not isn’t!

Good news /bad news ?...at least he will be out playing football again and if Pellegrino is any sort of a manager.... he should know how to play him this time around. He was MP's choice of player and so if anyone can get something out of him - he ought to.

Leganes lost their top striker in the close season and so Carrillo should get a lot more game time and hopefully get some goals. If he does find form and starts to look good ,
then Ralph will have another striker... unless another club comes in with a suitable offer.

I agree with (you) Nick that Carrillo came into a very poor side that was being chopped and changed the whole time in an attempt to avoid relegation. In the games I watched he was getting almost no service, and marked out by 2-3 defenders much of the time.
I'm sure he did his best to try and adapt to the Prem. style, but a striker has to be played until he does score (take note Che Adams), and although he didn't score any goals, he did make two assists in games that might have got us a valuable point or two.

Let's hope he comes good this time ..for everyone's sake.

I´m sure other options have been tried out but nothing came of it. So - it´s back to Leganes. Probably with Leganes paying more of his wages than last season.

Lets hope the continued exposure and game time, albeit at a different pace and level will work for GC, just as much as it might for FF and ME at Celtic.
Many 'bigger' clubs than us are getting in a mess with mopping up all the (relative) quality and then loaning them out. Clubs like Saints will need to be more proactive and perceptive and take advantage of this fluid market as we have in the recent past, with Romeu, Bertrand, Tadic and Alderviereld (albeit short term) to name a few. A closer look at potential swap deals when clubs start to return a calling -which they surely will -can only benefit too, coupled with the realisation that not many players set out as matchwinners or world beaters. The extra burden of some of us on their backs will not help their achievement, so some good old fashioned support is called for in these supposedly enlightened and privileged times.
