Saints Fans Feel No Sympathy For Watford Handball Claims !
Monday, 2nd Dec 2019 07:45

After Var Missed Moussa Djenepo's alleged handball for the equaliser against Watford that ultimately lead to the sacking of Quique Sanchez Flores, Saints fans felt no sympathy and their memories went back almost two years to a game at Viacarage Road.

Back on the 13th January 2018 Saints travelled to Watford under Mauricio Pellegrino with the team slipping down the table with no wins in previous 9 Premier League games.

Saints took a well deserved first half lead with two goals from James Ward Prowse and although the home side had pulled a goal back on the hour mark, it looked like we would be leaving with all three points until deep into injury time when the Hornets equalised with arguably the most controversial goal of that Premier League season.

Abdoulaye Doucoure clearly punched in the ball past Alex McCarthy an offence that was not spotted by either referee Roger East or a linesman who must have been blind to have missed what was a such a blatant handball.

Ultimately it dragged Saints into the abyss and cost Mauricio Pellegrino his job, it nearly cost Southampton Football Club a lot more than that, we looked doomed as we dropped and dropped and only pulled ourselves clear in the final week, more to the fact that Swansea fell more dramatically than us in the run in.

So no apologies to Watford fans that they now find themselves with a handball offence leaving them adrift.

Nothing against the Hornet's, but Doucore's offence was blatant cheating whilst the ball hitting Djenepo's hand although technically an offence that VAR should have pulled up under the rule changes, was an accident and not intended by the player whilst Dacoure despicably cheated.

Dacoure played the full 90 minutes at St Mary's on Saturday night so was ideally placed to witness the event and surely must have felt some sort of ironic flashback, not that I expect he cared one iota although the Watford's fans, the same ones who voted him player of the year in 2017/18 ,might have felt a little bit of Karma when it emerged that perhaps Djenepo should have been penalised and Danny Ing's goal ruled out.

So it might have taken nearly two years to wrong the right, but now it seems retribution has been obtained, no offence to Watford fan's but we at Southampton can find no sympathy at all for you.

EXACTLY RIGHT Nick. as I commented on an earlier post.

The previous occasion was a typical example of when we needed VAR.
A clear case of handball which the ref. either ….didn't see / was looking the other way/ bottled it in front of the home fans / decided a draw was a fair result.
(I'm just waiting for us to get a result v. Arsenal in the 96th minute.)

On this occasion, neither the Ref.. or his assistant.. OR the VAR ref's saw anything illegal.
Revenge/ Karma / tit-for-tat ..call it what you will . Fans have long memories and I feel (if there was an offence) , then justice was done - even if it was a long time in coming.

Not sure I agree that it was accidental. The angle I saw shows him deliberately guiding the ball on. But hey do we care, no chance.

These events even out over time. Amazing that this one evened out so specifically.

We played to the whistle, just like they did.

I don't think Djenepo could have done that on purpose, the ball flicked the defenders boot taking it on to his hand as I saw it. Anyway I believe we were stitched twice against Watford in the last couple of seasons, there was another incident last year which robbed us I seem to recall so it was about time we had that balance of luck redressed. You make your own luck though and I think if you're brave, yoy tend to get more luck. Boufal changed the game because he's brave enough to try to beat defenders, suddenly we looked potent..
