Blues are consistent and committed to move a game nearer Wembley
Wednesday, 4th Dec 2019 21:09

Kenny Jackett paid tribute to 'consistent and committed' Pompey after they ground out another home victory to make Football League Trophy progress.

They went 1-0 down to Northampton in the last 32 clash but fought back to win thanks to goals by Leon Maloney and Marcus Harness.

Jackett said: 'Northampton started better than us. We looked a bit hesitant, rusty and nervous — the first 20 minutes belonged to them and they deservedly took the lead. It seemed like it was going to be a long night for us, but credit to our players for digging deep and sticking at it.

'The remainder of the first half belonged to us and we got the equaliser. I’m really pleased for Leon to get his first goal. We were dominant after the break and really should have put the game to bed by scoring a few more.

'It took some excellent saves from their goalkeeper to keep it at 2-1, but we’re through in the competition and winning is a nice habit to get into. We’ve got a consistent and committed bunch here. There were some performances that we’re very pleased with.'

Pompey are in home action again on Saturday when Peterborough visit in League One.
