Saints Turn Down Third Leeds Bid For Che Adams
Wednesday, 22nd Jan 2020 16:03

Ralph Hasenhuttl has said he will not be sold in this transfer window, but Leeds United don't seem to want to take no for an answer as it is reported that they have now been turned down for a third time.

Presumably it is not Leeds United or Saints who are telling the press that the Yorkshire club have had a third bid for Che Adams turned down, nor is it likely that either club would have revealed that it was for a loan deal for the rest of the season with an option to buy at £20 million if Leeds should be promoted to the Premier League.

So who is putting this information out in the press ? as explained yesterday it will be agents, possibly not even Adams agent, but one further down the chain desperate for this deal to kick off a domino effect in transfers.

Whether this latest news is actually true or not if far from certain, but someone somewhere is desperate for this deal to happen.

Ralph Hasenhuttl certainly isn't and has said on several occasions that Adams is part of his plans and going nowhere, indeed it has shown those Saints fans who take to social media to ell the World that Gao is only interested in selling players just who is in charge of transfers and it seems that at Southampton the man having the final say is the manager himself.

So why do these rumours persist, we ll as I say they start chain reactions and perhaps if Saints were to suddenly find the man they are looking for at the right price it could start movement, but so far there is little evidence of that.

Saints though know that loan deals with options to buy mean nothing and that some clubs use them to their advantage, we thought we had sold Cedric last January with one of those deals, yet Inter Milan had no intention of buying him they just needed a cheap temporary back up to get them out of a fix.

Hasenhuttl seems to be looking towards Adams for next season, Shane Long is out of contract and perhaps will have one last move, then it would be Adams who would replace him, so he could well see more game time as the season progresses if Saints pull right out of any chance of relegation trouble and then the manager can afford to play him more instead of going for the tried and tested.

I think Long deserves another contract, I think we should keep hold of Adams as well. The quartet of Ings, Adams, Obafemi and Long can keep us going for another 2 years with Long replaced in +- 2 years by an academy graduate. We could argue that if we can get serious cash for Adams we should consider, but then I would say if we do go that route lets use the cash for a number of promising teenagers. Our first team squad is starting to look much better now we have settled on a system and there is no need to panic buy.

The story isnt about panic buying it's about selling.
I'd let Long go in the summer. Hes done a job for us but times up. Brilliant performance at palace and even then long missed two sitters to kill off the game. He misses so many chances that over time cost us points.
I'd keep Adam's. Hes only been here 5 minutes and surely we dont know yet how good he could be.
I disagree with your view on relying on our 4 strikers. Currently only one of those can be relied on to score. The other three all have things to prove for different reasons.

But Long bring so much more than goals, ask Danny Ings if he thinks he would have scored as many without Longs endless chasing down of lost causes. I would offer him a new contract like a shot. Agree too that there is no way we should sell Che he will come good.

Crazy idea to even think of selling him..

Any word about others potentially leaving Nick? I. E. Carrillo, Lemina, Forster, Elyonoussi? Reed, Hesketh and other youngsters who have hit the make or break age? Would be good if we could move on the first 4 and bring in some cash. Surely some teams will be interested in Forster..?

Following up on Colburn's contribution it could well be worth bringing the loanees back to the club and seeing how they fare under Ralph's tutelage. They might be better than they appeared under previous managers negating the need to buy!

I think we all expect players to settle into teams a bit too quick. It seems they often take a season to get up to speed. We have been lucky with several players that they have hit the ground running straight away.

Che needs a bit of time to find his feet in both the team and the step up in leagues. He's done some cracking assists and I am sure the goals will come at some point.

I can't believe there is any intention to cut and run on him so quickly As Nick says someone along the food chain is leaking to the press, or Leeds are using this story as a distraction to divert away from a different transfer taking place behind the scenes.

We'd all feel better if Ché had scored - even one gaol, but the longer his goal drought continues the harder it will be for him get acceptance from the fans. He was bought as a a striker ..but so too was Shane Long and for all the hard work he does in the side Shane really ought to be getting into double figures every season, instead of showing us how not to score goals.
I'd hate Ché to acquire that reputation before he even starts his Saints career.

IF we get ourseves an alternative before Jan 31st , then I'd say let him go (on loan ) although my only misgiving is the prospect of seeing Leeds back in the Prem.
Best to keep him just now and have a re-think in the summer.

We all seem to have similar thoughts, and in reading (above) about Josh Sims' loan out, we can see that, had Shane Long not lasted the course and moved on at 30, then Josh might have been an ideal replacement.

Ché is typical of the young player who sets the world alight in the lower leagues but find the move upto the Prem. to be a bigger challenge than they thought. It takes time. Those with slightly longer memories will recall "the young James Beattie" who had a tough couple of seasons before coming on song and in his best season went 10 games before scoring, yet went on to come second only to Thierry Henry for the Golden Boot.

Che´s time will come , we need more patience with him and he needs to learn - to relax.

SaintPaulW makes a very good point.
Che is 23. He was brought up in Leicester and eventually moved to Brum where he was for 3 years.
But last year he moved to a new City and, as the saying goes, after death and divorce moving is the is hardest thing for most people to do at the best of times. You don’t know many people if anybody, you don’t know who to like and trust and who not to, you don’t know very much at all of your new place like say your new neighbours. I don’t know whether there’s a Mrs Adams but then you’ve got the whole deal of your other half settling down etc. I know it all sounds silly but the fact is we all expect a new club signing to settle down immediately, fit in with all his new playing partners fist in glove, play like a God and score zillions of goals from day 1. Yes a few exceptional- generally older more experienced - players can do it, but a 23 year old? Unlikely.
So let’s cut Che some slack. I think next season he will be really good and I am sure that RH has seen this and has reassured him more than once that he is the future.

to David Argyll...I think we are singing from the same hymn book on this one.

The personal aspects of a transfer are often (sadly) overlooked. Even if a player comes for a big fee and a large salary, there are other things in life. Hampshire is an attractive area for some players (and even managers) to move to - except if you are from London and many continue to live here long after they have retired from the game, but unless the partner/wife/ family like it -it's a slippery slope to try and adjust.

My late father (a Saints fan in the post war period) often lamented that the great Charlie Wayman ..(the Danny Ings of his day), eventually moved back up country because his wife (a Northern lass) just couldn't adjust to life in the South. Even Lawrie McMenemy found it hard to be accepted by locals when he moved down from his Tyneside roots.

Don't know about Ché's situation (friends, family?) but if he's not getting support from the club and is feeling unhappy (at home) ...it doesn't auger well for his future here.
