Saints Interested In Towering Defender
Friday, 6th Mar 2020 11:29

Saints are being linked with a "towering" defender from the Championship, would it be a good or bad move ?

The man in question is Millwall defender Jake Cooper who according to my metres to feet conversion chart stands at almost 6ft 5 inches.

He started at Reading where he made 42 first team appearances in the Championship before going out on loan to Millwall in January 2017, in the summer of that year at 22 Reading clearly felt he had not made the breakthrough and he joined the South London club on a permanent deal in the summer of the same year.

Since then he has been a mainstay of their defence having made 117(3)League appearances to add to his 17 on loan.

The question is though can he make the jump from the Championship to the Premier League, for every player that can there are two that don't.

One thing he would be though is a bargain, his contract expires in the summer so he would at 25 presumably be available on a free, so from this perspective he could be a chance worth taking.

The reality though is that this is little more than his agent trying to generate interest from clubs ready for the summer.

We need to get a reliable back line by next season, and with Hoedt and Vestergaard clearly out of favour, someone out of contract will make no burden on a transfer budget.
Stephens and Bednarek are the best /only alternatives we have at present.

The only question mark (?) is that even a 6'4" CB is no guarantee of a place in our defence, and that someone who is good enough / outstanding / in the Championship may not be able to "cut it " in the Prem. (there are many examples of this)
but looking on the brighter side..what have we got to lose?. If he's been scouted properly and can be improved in coaching it's better than paying out another £15 million.

I've said it once and I'll say it again. The most important position in the team is holding midfielder. Get that position right and everything else falls into place.

I have said this before but do we really need a comment from you Nick when all these transfer rumours, most if not all of which are goundless, surface...?
You invariably talk about such gossip - for that is all that it is - is in the ether courtesy of agents and other interested parties, so what on earth is the point of you bringing it up, when there is zippo you can add...???!!!!
