Premier League Clubs To Discuss 30th June Deadline
Thursday, 16th Apr 2020 10:56

There has been a lot of discussions going on behind the scenes about how to conclude this season, it seems that the initial completion date could be brought forward.

There has been a lot of talk of late about playing behind closed doors and whilst this has always been a possibility, the Premier league were hoping that it might only need to be used for the early games after the season was resumed.

But now there is talk that instead of playing to mid July as has been worked towards, that it might now need to be completed by 30th June due to issues with players contracts ending on that date.

The League and clubs have now come to the realisation that it is not that simple to extend a players contract and that as i have said on several occasions, players out of contract who by definition are now wanted by their club are not going to risk their futures by signing an extension for a few weeks with the potential for an injury that will mean they can't play next season and without a club will not be paid.

Some clubs are also changing kit suppliers on a set date, but this is unlikely to be a real issue as the new kit suppliers would be for next season so in truth would not be affected.

So to avoid these contractual issues it would mean finishing by 30th June and that means starting behind closed doors and possibly finishing behind them as well.

It would mean 7 games in 4 weeks for most clubs, but again that is not a lot different to part of the main season, Liverpool for instance played 7 games between 2nd October and 2nd November and there were similar numbers for other clubs in Europe, so it is not impossible.

Also all clubs would be on an equal footing so it is a level playing field.

The Premier League will also discuss with its members the possibility of ending the league on that date whether all fixtures have been completed or not, they would hope that by then major issues would be solved, I would suggest that although Liverpool winning the League would have been done and dusted, I would be surprised if the final relegation places had been decided.

At the moment these are just items for discussion, but they are real issues and need to be decided before any resumption can be contemplated.

It's tricky because even if you play behind closed doors from 1 June. How do you train as a team before this. This virus spreads so easily that you could easily see a couple of teams needing to go into self isolation during May/ June.
