Italian Striker Once Again Linked With St Mary's
Tuesday, 5th May 2020 09:36

The Italian press are claiming that Southampton have made contact with Sassuolo about striker Gianluca Scamacca, although there are other clubs hovering.

We covered this story earlier in the year, but it seems that the Italian football press are bringing it up again.

In February it was claimed that AC Milan and AS Roma were all interested in the player along with Saints and Crystal Palace for the 6ft 4 inch striker who has beeon on loan this season at Ascoli in Serie B where he has scored 11 goals in 25 appearances in both Serie B and the Coppa Italia.

Comparisons can be drawn with another Italian striker Graziano Pelle, not only in his style of play but the fact that he has spent some time in Holland most notably in PSV Eindhoven's youth system.

He returned to Italy to join Sassuolo in July 2017, but they have mainly loaned him out, firstly back to Holland with PEC Zwolle with whom he played a limited number of Eridivisie games and then this season with Ascoli in Serie B.

His current value is somewhere around £2.6 million according to the media, although that could rise if there is competition to sign him.

The real drawback is that at 21 he has little top flight experience and is an unknown quantity, however if Saints can get him at a low price then he could be worth a punt.

In an exclusive Il Milanista who are covering the AC Milan interest, it’s stated three Premier League clubs have been in touch to ask about a transfer, and Southampton are the only one named.

As it stands, the Saints are ‘pressing’ to sign Scamacca, and have asked for information about a potential transfer.

If he's young and inexperienced ...then he has time to develop..but really people...are we being frightened off by the thought of spending £3 million on a promising young player. ?

I hope not. He surely can be a worse bet than when we went out and bought Juanmi !
