Injury Crisis For Saints Ahead Of City Game
Saturday, 4th Jul 2020 09:40

When you are hosting a rampant Manchester City side the last thing that you want is a raft of injuries, but that is what Saints have as they attempt to not only thwart City, but improve our appalling home form.

In the last five Premier League games at St Mary's Saints have lost four of them, all due to a lack of discipline and individual errors, they could be sitting in the top 6 if that record had been just a little better, but thankfully we can host City without fear of relegation.

But what we don't need is a shed load of injuries.

The main worry is Jannik Vestrgaard who has a muscle injury after an impressive performance against Watford, also both Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Sofiane Boufal won't be in Sunday's squad and Yan Vlaery and Nathan Tella neither of whom got on the pitch in the last game also have injuries.

But the real issue is in the back four with the free scoring City looking to keep the momentum going after slaughtering Liverpool in mid week.

But Jack Stephens is available again after serving a one match ban for his sending off against Arsenal and also returning will be Moussa Djenepo who has been unable to play in any of the first three games after lockdown due to his suspension for being sent off before the break against Newcastle United.

As impressive as Vestergard was against Watford, even if he was fit I would have put Stephens back in for this match as I don’t think he would have been as effective against Gabriel Jesus and co. As for the others we have cover so not too concerned.

I am inclined to think that whoever we play it will be immaterial, though, you are right Nick, another (what seems inevitable defeat) just accentuates our absolutely appalling home record. I fear a heavy defeat and of course on TV for the media to salivate over. Lets hope we prove the doubters (including me) wrong. Hope we play some good football at least.

Crisis? - What crisis?
it may look a lot on paper, but of the 5 I don't think it will harm team selection - will it ?

Boufal had just 5 minutes off the bench in the Norwich game, Vestergaard would not have needed to lace up his boots - if Jack Stephens hadn't been suspended,
Valery's place at RB is already in serious doubt now that KWP is getting more game time,
Nathan Tella is a new face not likely to challenge anyone for a place...and PEH has already got one foot out of the door and we need to learn to play without him sooner rather than later. I don't think this is crisis talk.

The bench will include ; Djenepo, Vokins, Smallbone, Danso, Long and /or Adams / Obafemi and a few Academy lads who have earned their chance.
Whatever side we put out will have an uphill task v. City anyway, and so I don't think the "absentees" will be greatly missed, and it will say a lot for the squad if we come away with even one point.

With our dire home record it will be an away banker but I don't anticipate a hammering. City put out a full strength team v Liverpool to prove a point against their main rivals. They are pretty well cemented into 2nd place and their focus will now be the FA cup and Champions League. I wouldn't be surprised if they rested a few players including Sterling and De Bruyne.
Saints home record is 20th (worse than Norwich, Villa, and Bournemouth) away form is Champions League. Perhaps we should deck out St Marys with away banners and colours!
