Saints Take On Coventry City Today
Tuesday, 1st Sep 2020 09:39

There has been no mention of the game on the Saints official site, but the media in the West Midlands are reporting that Coventry City will be visiting St Mary's on Tuesday afternoon for Saints second pre season friendly proper.

At one time Saints V Coventry City was a regular fixture on the calendar, but after the turn of the century it became less so and the Sky Blues have endured a torrid time of late and for a side that spent 34 consecutive years in the top flight until relegated in 2001, it has been a topsy turvy existence and at the moment they don't even have a ground to call their own.

It is good to see they are back in the Championship and they will provide a good test for Saints in front of a capacity crowd at St Mary's given the capacity at the moment is 0.

It will be interesting to see if this game will be split into various halves although I suspect that with Coventry facing an EFL Cup tie this Saturday at MK Dons it will be more of a straight forward 90 minute affair.

For those of us who are long in the tooth and thin in the hairline, the Coventry fixtures always made good entertainment. Coventry fielded good footballing sides, and always had some tough characters in midfield, and some good strikers up front.
I can recall a 5-5 game at The Dell, and further back the rude wake-up call in the 1965/66 promotion season when Saints beat fellow midlanders Wolves 9-3 at home on a Saturday and three days later went to Highfieid Road and got stuffed 1-5 by Coventry.

OK this is only a pre-season friendly and a few of today's youngsters weren't even born when they last played in the Prem...but we can hope for a sound performance considering we will be without several international players, but it's also a chance for some of our youngsters to show up.
