Wesley Hoedt is said to be in Italy this weekend to undergo a medical with his former club Lazio, but it looks likely that this move will only be another loan deal.

Wesley Hoedt has travelled to Italy this weekend and is likely to sign for former club Lazio on a year long loand deal.

This according to Italian sports journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, who took to his website to post a picture of the Dutchman arriving at Fiumicino airport in Rome ahead of his loan deal with Simone Inzaghi’s side.

The centre-back, who will move to Lazio on a temporary deal with a view to buy, is expected to undergo his medicals on Saturday morning and will then sign the contract that will tie him to his former club for the year.

There have been a few different claims regarding the amount he could be bought for, but Di Marzio has it as €5, a big loss on the £15 million Saints paid 3 years ago.

Furthermore, Hoedt had a few words to say to the journalists waiting for him, saying: “I’m happy to find Inzaghi again and the club”.

Saints would have hoped to have banked that £5 million now to enable them to bring in new signings before the transfer window shuts, indeed some would look back at Houdt's time at the club as a wasted opportunity, the Dutch central defender did have something about him and to be blunt rarely took part in a defensive debacle as we have witnessed in the last year or so.

His face did not fit with Ralph Hasenhuttl and so he has been out on loan for most of the time since the Austrian arrived.

Despite his obvious height advantage, Hoedt didn't "command the area" (as CB's ought to) and his hesitancy cost us vital points in certain games. I won't seek to blame him for several own goals he conceded - (this is unfair on defenders who are unfortunate to be in the wrong place at the wrong time), but obviouslythey did not help the cause. Many players "look good in a team that is playing well," but get found out when put under pressure themselves. In short Hoedt was a poor buy (by Reed and Wilson) who never quite lived up to his reputation and was never going to be "the new Van Dijk ". He became just another scapegoat for those many dismal performances in his time at SMS. In retrospect... I feel that Saints real error was not in selling VvD (still a good deal at the price) but in releasing Jose Fonte who went onto to play CL games in France, at the age of 36 and still got game time. Hoedt may still get a career at Lazio, but the experiment has cost us dearly.

SanMarco added 11:19 - Sep 27 I remember Craven Cottage. Hoedt came with 'high hopes' and Nick retained those hopes longer than most of us. The 'is he any worse than the current bunch?' question points more to a series of recriutment failures than any strength on Hoedt's part. TimSaint makes a good point about the lack of a queue. Other clubs have had a look and are keeping their money in their pockets.

EvertonSaint added 11:55 - Sep 27 Own goal? It always seemed to be Hoedt. Lacked presence and slow to react to players he was marking. He had chances to make a Mark, but failed. If we could get£5m for hike it would be a bonus at this stage.
