Angus Gunn In Potential Swap Deal With Stoke City
Monday, 5th Oct 2020 12:29

Latest media reports suggest that Saints goalkeeper Angus Gunn could be joining Stoke City on loan in a swap deal that would see a player move in the opposite direction to St Mary's

Stoke City and Southampton are in ‘talks’ over a potential swap deal for Jack Butland and Angus Gunn, according to media reports

Gunn, who at 24 years old is still young in goalkeeping terms, could be allowed to leave Whilst Butland still only 27 has been in need of a fresh start for a while so this arrangement would suit both parties.

Gunn is currently 3rd in the pecking order and needs to go out on loan to somewhere that he could be in with a chance of first team football.

Alex McCarthy is the current number 1 at St Mary's but he has not been convincing in the opening matches of the season, whilst Fraser Forster although having had a good season at Celtic is still untested back in the Premier League.

Saints would see Butland as an experienced keeper who had great potential and has gone stale at Stoke and is now number two to Adam Davies

Certainly Butland could be a better option than any of the three keepers on Saints books at the moment, but there could be a fly n the ointment as Liverpool may be in the market for an upgrade on Adrian who again was abysmal in their 7-2 defeat at Aston Villa last night, the Stoke keeper might be seen as a good short term option whislt Adrian is injured, but also a more than capable back up.

Butland will want first team football so that is more likely at Saints than Liverpool.

As memory serves..back in 2012..Saints offered Birmingham (?) £6 million for Butland, but the offer was refused. We bought Gazzaniga instead (not a good deal Mr. Pochettino).

Butland was one of a number of young keepers trying to dislodge Joe Hart from the England spot. As with many young keepers (like Gunn)..they found it hard to be consistent, and after Stoke's slide down the table, many of the goals they conceded could be put down to a poor defence in front of him rather than Butland's errors.

At £13.5 million.. we can't afford Angus Gunn spending the season as 3rd choice behind Forster and this is a good chance for him to get game time - even at Championship level.

As for Jack Butland...(?) if he can regain some form ...and with the eventual prospect of Fraser Forster eventually leaving.... it could be a win-win situation for everyone.

Bear in mind if this is a serious option a deal doesn’t have to be done today. Transfers with EFL clubs have another week until that deadline.
