Saints Get Home Draw In The FA Cup 3rd Round
Monday, 30th Nov 2020 20:31

Saints were one of the first sides out in the draw for the 3rd round of the FA Cup this evening and they got a home tie, find out who we have drawn here.

Saints will play Shrewsbury Town at St Mary's in a repeat of our First Round match ten seasons ago, when due to being in League One we had to enter the competition at the First Round stage.

Shrewsbury looked to have earned a replay until Saints scored twice in the final minute, firstly through David Connolly and then Adam Lallana.

In recent times we have also met them in the League Cup when we met them in a two legged tie in 1983/84, in the home leg Kevin Moore gave us a 1-0 lead to take to Shrewsbury's old Ground Gay Meadow, but it was not to be enough, a 2-0 defeat put then manager Ian Branfoot under even more fire than he was after Saints poor start to the season.

Shrewsbury were also the visitors in the 1986/87 League cup quarter finals when a Colin Clarke Penalty put us through to the semis where we were beaten by Liverpool.

In 1952/53 we were drawn away in the FA Cup and won 4-1 at Gay meadow

Our only League meetings with the Shrews came in the 1950's when we were in the Third Division South when we played them 5 seasons in a row, and then after a one season break again in the then Third Division.
