Saints Due A Result Against Liverpool ! Sunday, 3rd Jan 2021 11:36 In the last three seasons Liverpool have become something of a bogey team to Saints, after six straight defeats to the men from Anfield, can Saints get a point on Monday evening or perhaps something more ! Saints have lost six on the bounce to Liverpool, although prior to that they had a decent record against the Red Men, Claude Puel might not be the most popular manager in Saints history but he knew how to play against Liverpool. In 2016/17 season we played the Merseyside club four times and were unbeaten in all of them, the two Premier League fixtures both ended goal less although it did need a penalty save from Fraser Forster up at Anfield to preserve the point. But in the League Cup it was a different story and we won both legs of the semi final 1-0, Nathan Redmond giving us a 1-0 lead to take to Anfield for the second leg and then Shane Long scoring in the final minute of a tense encounter where Saints spent a lot of the game under the cosh , for those Saints fans that travelled that night it is considered one of the greatest Saints supporting nights of recent times. The previous season Saints finished above Liverpool and drew up at Anfield with Sadio Mane tapping in a last minute equaliser on the line after Gaston Ramirez's header had beaten the keeper. A 6-1 home defeat in the League cup in December after Sadio Mane had given us the lead in the opening minute was a shock, but the home fixture in the Premier League was a classic, Saints were 2-0 down in the first 22 minutes and that score was still the same on the hour mark, then came the Sadio Mane show and after he had equalised two goals in the final 7 minutes, one from Mane and another from Pelle gave us 3 points that had looked unlikely and ultimately jumped us above Liverpool into 6th place come the end of the season. Saints Liverpool games were usually classics including the one where Dejan Lovren gave us a 1-0 win at Anfield in September 2013. But in the last three seasons Saints have had no change from Liverpool and six straight defeats is unprecedented in the fixture, over the years the Anfield club usually have had the upper hand but Saints have often produced a classic result when it is unexpected. So surely Saints are now due at least a point against Liverpool on Monday evening, hopefully all three, it will not be easy, yes Liverpool have drawn the last two games against so called inferior opposition, but they will be like a wounded animal arriving at St Mary's and that is always a dangerous thing. But perhaps this will be a game that suits Saints, we will be pushed onto the back foot and will be able to counter attack at speed against a Liverpool back line ravaged by injury.
