Can Saints End Six Straight Defeats Against Liverpool !
Monday, 4th Jan 2021 13:01

Of late we haven't been that great against Liverpool, after 2016/17 when we played them four times in that season and were undefeated, we have lost six straight games in a row home and away, here we take a look at those games.

The away games have all been routs, the last one 4-0 and the two before 3-0, but it has been closer in the home fixtures.

Last season with Liverpool winning their first 8 Premier league games, we almost caught them cold at St Mary's in the 2nd, they had plenty of possession but failed to capitalise on it until the final minute of the first half when Sadio Mane put them ahead.

With 20 minutes to go Firmino seemed to have put the game to bed, but then Danny Ings scored from a bizarre goalkeeping error and then scuffed his shot in the final minute to almost give us a point.

The season before Liverpool came chasing the League title in a Friday night fixture, Shane Long gave us a 9th minute lead which we held until the 36th minute then Keita equalised.

Mo Salah in the 80th minute and then Jordan Henderson in the 86th gave them the win, but we had dug in and run them close.

In February 2018 with Saints sliding towards the relegation zone we needed a result when Liverpool arrived on the 11th, despite having more of the ball than the visitors we were always chasing the game after Firmino scored after 6 minutes, Salah scored just before the break, the stats say we put up a great battle, but truth was we were always second best that day.

Although that game was only three seasons ago, the Saints side is drastically changed, of the starting XI only Stephens, Bertrand Romeu & Ward Prowse remain, although Alex McCarthy in goal would have played today of not for Covid 19.

Shane Long Fraser Forster and Nathan Redmond were on the bench, but of the 18 on duty only 8 are still at the club, although Mario Lemina is still our player but on loan at Fulham.

This shows how far we have come in the last three years, it is time that we started to look forward instead of backwards, this is not 2018 and we are no longer a club that is in dire straits, we have a new board, a new manager and a new strategy and philosophy throughout the club.

In the past there have been some great games against Liverpool, here is a selection of photos from those games, can you name the year of the game and the players involved, ?

I think we''ll win 1-0 with Ingsy scoring a great goal from an assist by JWP very early in the game ;)
