Deal Sheet Submitted For Shane Long Move
Monday, 1st Feb 2021 23:44

Sky Sports have confirmed that Saints and Bournemouth have submitted deal sheets for the transfer across the New Forest of Shane Long.

It now looks certain that Shane Long will leave Saints in this transfer window, although it will be the early hours of the morning before it is confirmed, a deal sheet has been submitted meaning that both clubs have got two hours from 11pm to get things over the line.

It will be sad to see Long leave after 7 years at the club, he has had his critics of late but he has been a good servant to Saints and arguably one of the best value signings since Saints returned to the Premier League in 2012.

So an already thin squad that had almost a WHOLE bench for almost every game being youth players that none of us had even heard of, has now decided to remove 4/5 experienced players and get only 1 (which isn’t even certain yet) in replacement!? I mean I just can’t actually take in what we’ve just done!?...

We have let Vokins (2 Premier League games) & Valery who has barely played in 16 months leave, plus Shane Long who has started 1 Premier League game plus another 10 as sub, barely half the total number, so hardly players who have featured much or in the case of Vokins and Valery experienced.

Ideally we would have kept them, but these are strange times and we have to save money and that seems to be the case in most of the Premier League this window.

Ralph knows the injury situation and if we get them all back then we will not iss those who are gone

Unfortunately as RH said, we have no money. Strikes me that this window's activity has been based 100% on that. Let a few pretty much unused players go out on loan and ended up getting one speculative player in after a few attempts at filling our real need for a versatile FB came to nothing. Oh well just hope the injuries let up soon.

I don’t think we’ve done badly at all. Vokins and Valery were both starting to show something so shipping them out for a few months to get more experience seems to me a really sensible thing to do and it saves on our wages bill. And if they show anything with their loan clubs the we can either take them back or sell them so what’s not to like. And from what I’ve seen and heard about Timino, he is a REAL talent. So stop complaining ElijahK. Of course we could struggle for a few weeks, but on the other hand we may not. Much better in my view to get the current squad to play more together and not spend a fortune which we haven’t got, than bringing in three or four new boys who would probably take months to fit in, if at all.

I've been one of Shane's harshest critics over the years. Yes he holds the ball up well and stretches play but his lack of quality in front of goal, for a striker, always got me angry. We all know the sitters he's missed but he gave his all for the club be it from the start or bench and did help us get to Wembley. When he was able to weigh in with a goal or two they were important points that kept us up. Sad to see a good servant go (if the deal gets done) but good luck to him. Walcott can fill that void now (missing those easy chances) 😂 Minamino.. I hope he's ready to hit the ground sprinting!

As this thread is only about Shane Long, firstly we ought to congratulate Bournemouth on getting a good deal. The only negative that anyone can bring against Shane is his sometimes poor lack of finishing when going for goal, but historically Saints have made far more costly deals for players who didn't contribute an iotas-worth of Shane's effort,
in application, influence in the dressing room and contribution on the training ground with young players cannot be over-valued. His real strength remains his fantastic pace which will benefit B'mouth at the lower level, and instead of a 10 minute sub.apps. off Saints' bench, he will surely get chances to show up in regular games in what is probably the final stages of his long and not insignificant career. Good luck Shane.

This window suggests to me that the club’s financial position most be perilous to say the least. What other reason can there be for letting four players go out on loan ( don’t forget Simms) and only getting one in? Particularly when viewed in reference to the full back situation where cover for injury to players now appears to be non existent.

I suspect that the owners have come to the conclusion that barring an absolute disaster Premiership football is assured for next season so as far as they are concerned once again it’s mission accomplished.

Frankly on the basis of the lack of ambition shown in this window the chances of retaining the services of Ings or Bertrand long term now look pretty close to zero in my opinion.
