Boost For Saints As Walcott Returns To Training
Thursday, 25th Mar 2021 12:16

Saints fans will be pleased to hear that Theo Walcott is back in training and it could not have come at a better time with important games coming up in both the FA cup and the Premier League.

Theo Walcott will have been out for over two months by the time he returns to action for Saints, he limped off in the 65th minute of the 1-0 home defeat to Aston Villa on 30th January and with the International break meaning there are no fixtures this weekend, it will be the visit of Burnley on Sunday 4th April before he will have a chance to play in a game again.

But his return will be welcomed to a Saints squad that even though the injury crisis has abated a little is still a little short on options.

Walcott will offer a good attacking option for Ralph Hasenhuttl as the season approaches it's climax and with the game against Burnley a fixture in which Saints will be looking to take a big step forward and put any lingering doubts of relegation to bed before travelling to a West Bromwich Albion side who will be in last chance saloon when we visit the Hawthorns.

Walcott has another week of training ahead of him to ensure that he is not only free of the muscle injury sustained in January, but to get his fitness levels back up to as near as 100% as he can.

Saints fans will be looking next for the sight of Danny Ings back on the Staplewood training ground, he has been out since the early part of the win at Sheffield United on 6th March and he too has been missed.

Saints will hope that they have both Walcott and Ings fit for the two Premier League games and firing on all cylinders when we travel to Wembley in three weeks time to meet Leicester City.

In our present situation any returning player who is 100% fit is a real bonus.
With another week to go until the next League game, the prospect of Danny Ings returning will give Ralph some more options. During the last 2 months we've been over-dependent on Ché Adams, who is finding some form at last, but the prospect of seeing him back - after a couple of games for Scotland - means that we shouldn't expect a flat-out 95 minutes from him every game for the rest of the season.

We all starting enthusing about Nathan Redmond after his M.O.M rating in the B'mth Cup game, but it remains to be seen if that was a "one off ", or a return to the Redmond form that we saw a couple of seasons ago. One can only hope.

As this thread is about Theo Walcott...it's a great chance for Ralph to see if he can fit in because (even at 32) , he still looks to be pretty sharp. He will be a free agent in the summer, and if he shows up and DAJFU, it would mean that we'd skip a transfer fee, and (if we can find the right salary level) he could be a good "stop-gap" in the next couple of years, especially if media stories of Ings' imminent departure have any truth in them.
