Southampton FC Issue Statement On European Super League
Tuesday, 20th Apr 2021 22:20

This morning I said that the European Super League plans would be an opportunity to wrest the game back from the clutches of the Big Six, as this evening unravelled that now seems to be the case, Saints themselves have just issued a statement clarifying their position.

The statement is as follows:

At a meeting with the Premier League held earlier today, the club put on record its complete opposition to the plans for a breakaway Super League.

The club echoes the sentiment of our supporters, and of fans around the world, that the plans are borne from a position of greed and a fear of true competition.

We are a club that has experienced the rollercoaster of relegation and promotion through the football pyramid. We have also lived the fairy-tale of progressing from the third tier of English football to the Premier League and qualifying for European football on merit.

Those experiences are what form the values of who we are as a club today - values that are totally at odds with what these proposals stand for.

The club will do everything in its power to stand alongside the government, Premier League, governing bodies and those clubs who have the best interests of the game at heart to prevent these plans becoming a reality.

A full statement from the Premier League on this issue is below:

The Premier League, alongside The FA, met with clubs today to discuss the immediate implications of the Super League proposal.

The 14 clubs at the meeting unanimously and vigorously rejected the plans for the competition. The Premier League is considering all actions available to prevent it from progressing, as well as holding those Shareholders involved to account under its rules.

The League will continue to work with key stakeholders including fan groups, Government, UEFA, The FA, EFL, PFA and LMA to protect the best interests of the game and call on those clubs involved in the proposed competition to cease their involvement immediately.

The Premier League would like to thank fans and all stakeholders for the support they have shown this week on this significant issue. The reaction proves just how much our open pyramid and football community means to people.

Statement ends:

It has been a landmark day for football when the rich have tried to take over the game and football fans and their clubs have stood firm, it should be noted that the protests have seen the fans of the Big Six at the forefront, including Chelsea fans who were out in force at their game against Brighton.

Those that have said that fan power has no affect on those that run football clubs have found out today that this is far from the truth, the people have spoken !

If there was a referendum on this issue I don't think the result - surely a massive "no" - would affect the thinking of the money men behind this push. Only actions, like that of Chelsea fans will have any effect. If it happens, far from saving football it will herald the funeral march to football's oblivion, at least as we know it. It might herald the resurgence of football at grass roots level. I certainly hope so!.

No u turn from yourself then Nick? You have consistently promoted that the breakaway was inevitable and the best thing that could happen from our club's perspective. I have consistently disagreed with that view, believing any Super League would suck money out of the game and bring clubs like ours into financial meltdown. Just my point of view, and I have no idea whether my opinion was correct or not, but the club certainly isn't in favour of the wealthy elite leaving the league. I know you love banging a drum when it's a lost cause but even you must admit that the supporters of the breakaway clubs, current and former players and media outlets have acted quickly and decisively and pushed the elite into a corner. Please, no articles telling us how a great opportunity has been missed because the game is about matching performance on the day not just about wealth. Let's try and be a Leicester and get a positive mentality rather than sulk because the owners can't chuck millions into the club. Perhaps the governing bodies should now focus on how supporters can have a greater say in the club they support, in the German style, now that would a step in a positive direction.
