Southampton Preparing For Offers For Vestergaard
Thursday, 29th Jul 2021 12:03

Saints are preparing for an offer or two for central defender Jannik Vestergaard as he enters the last year of his contract at St Mary's, but you get the feeling that the club would jump at the right offer if it came along.

Jannik Vestergaard arrived at St Mary's in the summer of 2018, but throughout most of his time here his performances have been a little underwhelming and indeed a year ago he found himself 4th choice behind Jan Bednarek, Jack Stephens and new signing Mohammed Salisu.

Luckily for him Salisu was not fit for first team football when he arrived and after defeats in both the opening two games of the season Vestergaard found himself in the team.

Suddenly he looked a different player and as Saints stormed to the top of the Premier League he was a key component.

An injury in December disrupted his season and when he returned to the side he never really recaptured his early season form.

But that good form attracted other clubs and surprise surprise Tottenham Hotspur where linked back in January and going forward.

Now the rumours are circulating again and with a year left on his contract expect Spurs to come in with a starting offer than knowing how Daniel Levy operates will probably start with us paying them money.

But like the departure of Pierre Emile Hojbjerg a year ago, you just get the feeling that Saints would be happy for a decent offer to come in.

Mohammed Salisu was signed to replace Vestergaard and with high hopes for Dynel Simeu, the club would seemingly prefer a good transfer fee for Vestergaard now and be able to use it in other areas.

The main hope is that it is done early so that we can put any money received to good use, but that would mean Spurs are out of the running given their preference for doing last day last hour deals to try and get a cut price.

But there are more clubs in than Spurs and there could be European clubs in the mix.

So this is one departure that perhaps like Hojbjerg would be better than keeping the players at the club.

"you get the feeling that the club would jump at the right offer if it came along."

I think you could change "right" to "first"

If Vestergaard does go we would need to get a replacement quick. We dont want to start the new season with Jack Stephens in the team. With a bit of luck Dynel Simeu will be a lot better than him.

Our win record when Vestegaard was fit last season was good, with one of the features of his play being his ball distribution. Him not starting coincided with our slump (along with Ings and Bertrand not signing contracts which they were entitled to do I guess).

I also was impressed when he showed some belief in RH's project when he was not a first choice the previous season and he at that time did not look for an exit.

Yes he is a little slow for balls in behind but I for one would be sorry to see him go and would like to see him commit to a new contract.

Whatever was good / not so good in the past is irrelevant when talking about a player who is in his last year. If he won't sign a new contract and his mind is made up then we must make the best of the situation. I have read (somewhere) that his signing cost Saints £22 million (?) and so it would be plain daft to let him walk away for nothing at the end of the season and get no return.

His value must have increased after the Euros and so should take the best offer that comes and (reluctantly) say thanks ...and good luck - just as long as it isn't to Spurs.

As has been said before the only way to prise open Levy's wallet before the last day of the transfer window is to get serious competition from other clubs for Vestergaard's signature. Hopefully reasonable offers will come in very quickly. Very odd that Alderweireld was shuffled off on the cheap to Qatar recently though, are Spurs debts catching up with them I wonder.

Just swap ‘praying’ in for ‘preparing’ in the headline, and you’d be about right.

I seriously hope we keep Vestergaard. When he is at his best he is a CLASS defender. His distribution is very, very good, and he has become better at positioning himself on the pitch. His best season in English football is just around the corner, I firmly believe. I fear that any offer above 18 mill. pounds will be accepted.
