Southampton Trial Former West Ham Prodigy In B Team Win
Monday, 18th Oct 2021 14:35

Saints B side earned their first win of the season against Wolverhampton Wanderers with the help of a striker who has left West Ham United in the hope of finding first team football.

A strong Saints B team including the likes of Will Smallbone, Dynel Simeu, Thierry Small & Caleb Watts defeated a Wolves side including £35 million signing Fabio Silva up in the midlands this lunchtime, the games only goal being scored from a first half penalty by Kazeem Olaigbe.

But the real question mark is who was the player named only on the team sheet as a trialist ?

The answer was former West Ham United academy graduate Kai Corbett, a player who can play primarily as a right winger but can also switch to the left or play as a centre forward.

Corbett turned down a contract with the Hammers in the summer and decided that his future lay elsewhere.

Manchester United were a club who were interested a year or so ago, but turned down the chance as they felt that the fee that they would have to pay the Hammers would be too high a price.

Corbett seems to have fitted in a lot for someone who has just turned 19, he has played for Barcelona and Chelsea at junior level, signed schoolboy terms at Arsenal, turned down a professional contract at Espanyol, and as mentioned came close to joining Manchester United.

Ironically he has recently been on trial with today's opponents Wolverhampton Wanderers, but for whatever reason has not signed a deal and today turned out for Saints.

Perhaps after seeing how Tino Livramento has gone from Chelsea U23 obscurity to a regular in the Premier League has prompted him to feel that St Mary's may be a good destination for his next club.

In contrast to our newly-signed teenage talents like Broja, Livramento and Small, who had previously been " one club boys" , it seems that Kai Corbett has already done the rounds of some " big-name clubs" in trying to get a good fit for his talents.
This may show a real desire to succeed and get proper game time at a higher level, or perhaps there is some other reason that he hasn't been signed by other clubs already (?).

A few more outings with the B side may give him the opportunity to show off his talents
and impress - or....maybe not?

With Long and Walcott running down their careers, Elyounoussi attracting interest from other clubs and Broja on a loan deal I'm not surprised we're looking at new signings. If Corbett shows real promise he could be another in the Livramento and Small category as underweststand has already mentioned. Without wishing to get too carried away at this stage what an exciting prospect it is to think that Simeu and a few others are close to first team football as well.

The B team won! Not sure if that says anything.

Hopefully George Weah isn't related.
