The RamZone Man of the Match

Throughout this past season, we've been asking you, our readership, to cast your votes each week for the Rams' Man of the Match.

That may be a laughable proposition but you did it nonetheless and so it falls to me to proclaim Hossam Ghaly the winner of this competition.

The on-loan Egyptian won four votes, beating Alan Stubbs and Roy Carroll, who each had three. This is not really a surprise given that on more than one occasion it seemed that Ghaly was the only player in the black and white who appeared to have any idea what he was doing or seemed willing to make something happen.

It's obviously disappointing that the cultured midfielder will be plying his trade somewhere else next season as, like Leon Osman before him, he brought a style of play and endeavour that was a breath of fresh air during extremely turbulent times and I wonder who else will provide that spark next season.

The runners-up will both be at Pride Park next season and they will obviously fulfil very important roles as the Rams seek an instant return to the top flight from the dreaded Championship. Stubbs' character and positional sense will be vital, especially if he's partnered by Claude Davis and Roy Carroll must provide the calming influence that Stephen Bywater produced two seasons ago so that the Rams have the backbone they can rely upon in their attempts to get back to the Promised Land.

As it happens I would have had Darren Moore at the top of my list for Player of the Year given that he got the most out of his own talents which, and says it all, weren't nearly enough to give us a chance of staying up. Ghaly however did have that ability to make a run or see a pass that his teammates otherwise lacked and for that reason, there can be no real argument that the Egyptian cannot be named your winner.
