Jesse Lingard For Southampton ? I Don't Think So !
Sunday, 14th Nov 2021 20:42

According to the latest transfer rumour Saints are one of three clubs linked with a move for Manchester United's Jesse Lingard, but this is perhaps one of the more far fetched rumours for more than one reason.

Saints are being linked with Jesse Lingard from Manchester United alongside Newcastle United & his former loan club West Ham United, but surely Ralph Hasenhuttl will not be interested in a player who is not only out of Saints normal age range, turning 29 in December, but also out of Saints wage bracket and indeed transfer fee ceiling given that although his contract is up next summer United are still looking for around £12 million for the player.

At West ham United last season on loan, Lingard scored 9 Premier League goals in just 16 appearances, but all of those goals were in the first 10 games and in the remaining 6 he failed to hit the back of the net.

At Old Trafford this season he has found games and goals harder to come by and United are ready to try and get something for him in January.

I think that they won't be getting anything from Saints taking all things into consideration, however he does fit the profile that both Newcastle & West Ham would look for, someone to give them a boost in the New Year as he did at the London Stadium at the same stage last season.

I doubt we will go for him personally, but I wouldn't say he doesn't fit our profile, £12m definitely isn't out of our price range, and he's reportedly only on 70k a week which is less than we pay walcott. he's a very energetic and technical winger who also happens to be one of the best pressers in the prem, which i would say suits ralphs style pretty well. also not sure how you've somehow tried to spin 9 goals in 16 as a negative? regardless of whether or not those goals "only" came in the first 10 (9 goals in 10 is even more ridiculous) that's still great form even counting the 6 game goalless run (also by our standards atm, quite a short goalless run)

He would suit our playing style, but if we had cash to invest we would never be going for this type of player.

Agree Nick, I don't see Lingard in a Saints shirt either.
This type of news story is typical of an agent " on a fishing trip " , or a dead-beat journo with nothing else to write about on that day.
Knowing the distain that the " big clubs " show to teams like Saints; I doubt if he would consider us anyway, and I can't see Saints being willing to match his MU salary.
Try West Ham Jesse, they always have money to burn.
