Southampton Once Again Look To Salzburg For A Striker
Sunday, 29th May 2022 10:19

The last time Saints did business with RB Salzburg they signed Sadio Mane, who made his name at St Mary's and subsequently moved to Liverpool, now the Southampton scouting system is looking to the land of the Sound Of Music again.

Saints paid around £12 million for the then virtually unknown Red Bull Salzburg striker Sadio Mane back in 2014, now 8 years later we are looking at the Austrian Club's strikers again and are apparently about to make a similar priced bid for Junior Adamu.

Adamu is primarily a centre forward but can also play as a right winger, turning 21 in the next week or so, he has been at RB Salzburg for the last 2 years after signing from FC Liefering for £1.35 million.

He was immediately loaned to Fc St Gallen in the Swiss Superleague league and 6 goals in 14 games saw his stock rise.

In 21/22 he became a regular fixture in the RB Salzburg side and scored 7 times in 30 appearances, leading to a raft of interest in the striker.

RB Salzburg are said to be willing to do business at £12 million, but Saints will have competition if the media are to be believed, in England West Ham are also said to be interested as well as German clubs Hertha Berlin and Red Bull Leipzig with Ajax giving the Dutch interest.

Although born in Nigeria he has been capped at all levels in Austria including a substitute appearance in a World Cup qualifying game, however that was only a fleeting cameo role lasting just a minute plus injury time.

The Red Bull Salzburg connection will raise hopes in Southampton that they can sign another Sadio Mane, but the sheer number of clubs being linked suggests that his agent is being very active in the media.

It should be noted that we signed Mane after he had scored 31 Austrian Bundesliga goals in two seasons, whereas Adamu has scored just 7 in his one season with Salzburg, so he is a lot rawer than Mane.

The player is under contract until 2025 so RB Salzburg are under no real pressure to sell, other than there own desire to cash in.

I'm thinking that the post Brexit points system for recruiting players is going to make this a non starter. From what I believe to be the current situation, although he may be very talented he has to tally fifteen points from club and country appearances at the higher levels of European and World ranking. I guess he's going to sign for a team in Europe no matter how much we offer to pay.

7 goals in 30 league games, the same return as Adams but in an inferior league? He would if he came be one for the future. Do we not have anyone who may already fit that bill?
It may be easier to find out if we arranged decent loans for our promising players and at a younger age. Our youngsters need to be playing against better and more physical teams than under 18's or under 23's if they are to progress to the first team!
