Saints Linked With Olympique Marseille Defender
Wednesday, 10th Aug 2022 21:18

Southampton are being linked with a defender from Olympique Marseille defender Pol Lirola according to Sky Sports news, perhaps not the central defender that we crave, but a clear indication that Ralph thinks we have a weakness on the left.

Pol Lirola is a right back and Sky Sports are reporting that the 24-year-old former Spain U21 international is among the options we are looking into as they search for cover to the injured Tino Livramento.

This suggests that Ralph Hasenhuttl is not happy with his left sided options and if Lirola comes in he will play on the right with Kyle Walker Peters reverting to the left wing back position.

Lirola is valued at around £8 million pounds and has played for several clubs in Italy over the past few years before joining Marseille firstly on loan then in a permanent deal last summer.

A strange transfer for Saints given they have several options in the full/wing back department on either side and of course hopefully Tino Livramento returning in January, there are at least two more positions that we should be looking at first.

Doesn't surprise me.
Typical of the type of player we're are signing in this transfer window.
We should only be looking at & buying players that are better than what we already have. If we sign this guy it will our 7th signing which sounds great, BUT how many if them have improved our team , I would suggest only & Bazunu & Lavia qualify for that. Perhaps we could include Aribo as an good signing but until we find his best position then we will not get the best out of him so the jury is out on him.
This guy Pol Lirola will be another bench warmer so the squad gets bigger but the team gets no better.
All the fans agree that our priority is a commanding ctr back / leader & at least one preferably 2 proven Premier lge strikers.
But time (& budget) is running out so we're very unlikely to get what we wish for.

Are we going to be linked with every average or unsettled player for the next 3 weeks? Nearly the weekend and still no striker of note, this is more concerning. He has to play two up front against Leeds, surely.? But only one bench replacement is hampering our tactical options and substitutions too.

Ok this is getting ridiculous. We have wingbacks in KWP and RP. We need a seasoned CB. If the backroom/management cant get that done, then they need to go. EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE knows we need a CB not a RB or LB. UGH - as we are on this transfer topic, if we sell Che, then I will know that RH and the whole lot are morons. Che was one of our best strikers last year and if RH prefers AA to him, then RH has lot the plot and needs to go. I think I speak for the majority of Saints fans that this dithering will cost us dearly. Someone get their heads out of the bums and make a good call and get us a seasoned CB.

Nail on the head AmericanSaint. They can’t/don’t want to see the problem/s. For the rest of us, we can all see that Ralph is stealing a living as a Premiership manager. Hopefully not for too much longer.

AmericanSaint, I agree but in the fans forum last night, link on the Saints website, it was made clear Che Adams was not for sale. Presumably the RB rumour is just paper/agent talk.

I keep waiting for the "Saints linked with player some of us have actually heard of" headline Nick. Every time I have to look up a player profile, to try and ascertain their potential, I feel a touch more anxious about the club's future.

Carry on Saints - Ralph as the self righteous character that Kenneth Williams used to play.

I guess the board would be made up of Sid James, Charles Hawtrey and Bernard Bresslaw.

Beyond annoying and embarrassing - I feel like I'm watching a steamroller crashing in slow motion.

We have a B team and you would assume, that for a short period of time, one of the defenders from said B team could occupy the bench?
However we are desperately short of a striker that would give us options in front of goal.
We have a pretty good squad but need to be able to compensate for defensive vulnerabilities by being able to put a few away at the other end!
