Southampton Have Former RB Leibzig Coach On Radar
Monday, 10th Oct 2022 09:35

According to media reports Saints are mulling over a move for former RB Leipzig coach Domenico Tedesco and Italian bord German citizen who has had a meteoric rise up the coaching ladder.

Saints are said to be reviewing the managerial situation and one of those being considered is Domenico Tedesco, the 37 year old has recently been sacked by RB Leipzig, after only 9 months in the job, despite leading them to 4th place in the Bundesliga, the semi finals of the Europa League and winning the German Cup

A bad start to this season however saw him sacked at the end of September and he has not yet currently took another job.

Although he worked for various German teams in their youth set ups since 2008 at the age of just 23 with slow progress through the pecking order, his rise has been meteoric over the past 6 years, he started as a head coach only in 2016 when he was appointed to the job for Bundesliga 2 side Erzgebirge Aue, although the season was not record breaking with a 14th place at the end of it, for the 2017/18 season he was appointed by German top flight side Schalke 04.

In his first season he guided them to 2nd place in the Bundesliga, however the second season was not such a success and after being beaten 7-0 by Manchester City and 7 games without a win he was sacked in March 2019.

Next stop was Spartak Moscow just after the start of the 2019/20 season's start, his record there was generally good, in his second season he took them to 2nd place and he was popular with the fans, however he had already announced he would not stay beyond his initial two year contract due to the impact of Covid on his family life.

It was back to Germany on 9 December 2021, taking over the head coach position at RB Leipzig, ironically the club that had been Ralph Hasenhuttl's previous employers before arriving at St Mary's.

On paper Tedesco looks the type of manager that Saints would be interested in, but there are some warning signs, he is still at 37 very young and with little experience still, secondly he has never stayed at a club for long, either of his own choice as at Spartak Moscow or due to being sacked.

I would think that Saints will be considering their moves now, I would think that there preferred route is that Ralph Hasenhuttl wins a few games and means they don't have to take action, the new owners seem to have a plan and that plan is not sacking a manager at every little set back.

But ultimately football is a results driven game and after 4 straight defeats, Hasenhuttl is under pressure, with only a month to go before the break for the World Cup, I do not expect them to do much before then.

The new owners apear to be looking carefully for Ralph's inevitable replacement. I would expect a few more candidates to be consdered before any final selection is made - they appear to know what the are doing and will not make rash and hurried decisions. As for Ralph - last season we contested the Man City game twice with considerable credit. This season we were totally outclassed and very fortunate to get away with 0-4. If we lose the next two games the new owners will have had their decision already made for them.

In fairness JoeEgg, with Harland City will walk away with the league this season. At least we stopped him scoring a hat trick.

IanRC.. it wasn't the result it was the manor of it. City passed around a team without organisation or energy. Luck to be 4 , we didn't limit Haaland the lack or urgency from Man City did.

I was hoping someone would be in place this week but he'll get two more games win one and stay in his job

I think we are all aware that the next two games, both at home will decide Ralphs immediate future. Goals change games and futures and that is our biggest problem, if we create chances and we do, we are unable to finish them with any regularity. For all our displeasure and there is plenty as we can see, mine too. However if we were successful with the 10% of shots during a game that should result in a goal we would be in a far better position!
The cost of putting all of our eggs in one basket for a striker in the summer, although we are deperate for a finisher in January lets no be too rash, no one wants another Carrillo.

I know the Sports Republic model is to go for young players who have a sell on value but does that have to apply to a new manager as well? What next, Martin Semmens gets replaced by a graduate straight out of uni with a business degree?

Ralph has said before that he would not go beyond his current contract as he had other aims to achieve. That is the end of next season.
Having moved a lot of dead wood replaced with young and very young highly talented players the priority must be to get through this season still in the premier league. Further astute player investment and a controlled move on the coaching front would be ideal.
However belief in the coach is an important and ephemeral entity….. maybe Ralph is winding down unconsciously. He has worked like a horse with a lot of poorly motivated players and saved our club on many levels almost single handily on the playing side.
One step at a time I guess ….. hard as a fan to watch paint dry!
