Moussa Djenepo like many of his colleagues in the Southampton squad did not have his best season for the club making over 16 appearances in the Premier League, now comes news of a potential loan move.

When Moussa Djenepo arrived at St Mary's in August 2019 it created some interest, a spectacular goal at Brighton followed up by a decent 2nd goal for the club at Sheffield United a few weeks later gave Saints fans hope that Djenepo might be the real deal.

But he soon struggled to get consistency and although he would often make some decent runs, there was rarely much end product.

He played 16 times in the Premier League in 2022/23 getting 2 assists, but only 9 of these games were starts and indeed 7 of these were the first 7 games of the season, by the time Ralph Hasenhuttl had left the club in November he had played the bulk of his games and he would play only 6 more times in the final 24 games under firstly Nathan Jones and secondly Ruben Selles, for the bulk of these games he wasn't even on the bench.

However after his three seasons had produced little he was given a 3 year contract extension back in September taking him up to 2025.

But although is stock is not exactly high at St Mary's and questions linger whether he has the physical attributes for the Championship, it seems that he is coveted elsewhere, according to SportWitness Fenerbahçe in Turkey are setting their sights on a loan deal.

Also on the story are Turkish media outlet Fanatik they also claim that Turkish clubs are on the case for several other Southampton players namely Sulemana & Lyanco
.
The reports suggest that any interest is limited to a one year loan deal with an option to buy, but with Djenepo's contract only having a year left at the end of the loan spell, the price would surely be a lot lower than the £12 million or thereabouts that Saints paid 4 years ago.

Djenepo will be on a decent wage at St Mary's and Saints will be keen to get that off the books for next season, it seems that the best they can hope for now is to cut their losses by saving wages and perhaps getting a small fee next summer if he can have a good season in Turkey.

Djenepo is a talented player and has worked hard at improving his game but never delivers enough to demand selection. Substitute several player's names for Djenepo in the previous sentence and I'm contemplating, again, whether the coaching staff were fit for purpose. I suspect that I know the answer to my question.

inthebox added 10:53 - Jun 9 Djenepo is one of a string of players that we have signed that just do not quite have what it takes to perform in the premier league on a consistent basis thats during the 90 minutes and on a weekly basis. This is why the managers have been introducing different line ups every week, the reason given is playing to the opposition but the reality is the majority of our squad are too inconsistent either on match days or in training.

halftimeorange added 11:15 - Jun 9 If so many of our squad of so-called inept players are being coveted by other clubs it seems to me that the talent has always been there (e.g., Boufal in the World Cup) but, nobody at St Marys has had the ability to collectively harness it. Good coaches bring out the best in poor players and make good players even better. We've seen virtually no progress in that respect for several seasons.

I think the reason Moi started every game was because his "overall game" was considered better, but he was just bang average. Edoze, was dropped for similar reasons and I don't think we have seen enough of Sullemana or Mara . We have managed to buy a whole host of attacking midfielders in the hope that they will supplement the lack of strikers and then try to make them defend. Djenepo had a MOTM performance , a goal and an assist against Man City in a shock 2-0 win and he was promptly dropped.

SaintPaulVW added 12:23 - Jun 9 I like Djenepo, one of the few creative players we have who can create something out of nothing, unfortunately, too often it turns back to nothing :(. I also worry he'll be too fragile for the more physical Championship. He doesn't seem that robust and appears to get very upset or succumbs to some form of injury when he gets targeted by a few stiff challenges. I think if there is a sensible offer for him or a decent loan move we should take it. Shame but we need to quickly reshape the squad for the new challenge ahead.

Ralph then decided that he wanted to change a goal scoring forward into a full back. Why? because that’s what he consistently did, make players worse. I can’t think of one player who’s ability improved after being coached by £6 million a year man.

landsdownsaint added 15:40 - Jun 9 As I’m always bleating about how Ralph was so good the one player who suffered under was Djenepo, he’s good enough for the prem & is the only player we got that spots a slide ball in the box , when he first come here and where I sit he had us on our feet every time he got the ball the Ralph decided too shackle him

claus5 added 16:35 - Jun 9 Is there another Djenepo in our squad, cos the one iv'e seen for 3 years has been 90% crap? I must be missing something that others see, he didn't get in the team cos he simply is'nt good enough. Tries hard, but mostly fails. Wish him all the best, but get ris asap.

Block8 added 17:40 - Jun 9 Another reasonably expensive & untried misfit from the lower European leagues, whilst consistently ignoring our own youngsters? Would do some good work but all to often fall over his own feet shortly afterwards. He's another nearly man that may still block the advancement of some of our exceptionally promising youngsters and for that reason I'd let him go! COYR

davidargyll added 23:31 - Jun 9 Many spot-on comments here, especially if as I suspect many of us believed that Djneppo only showed occasional glimpses of what one thought he was capable of. Over the last 18 months we bought in some seemingly decent quality players who all of a sudden turned out to be anything from below average to utter rubbish when they turned out for Saints. I for one cannot believe that our scouting was entirely dreadful so the only possible conclusion is that the coaching staff didn’t really know what they were doing. I and many others said time and again throughout last season that we lost a whole host of matches because at vital moments we didn’t seem to be able to get the basics right, which IMHO was 100% down to the coaching staff, end of… And wasn’t that a certain mr R Selle’s domain for the most part…?

Peterx added 07:48 - Jun 12 Sides are going to go into a low block against us in the championship especially if we are dominating possession, players with some X factor and creativity like Djenepo, especially if he can get regular cameos or games could be the difference. He also did not do that much wrong last year when he played but Jones and Selles did not trust him, to me he would likely have been better than what we saw if given a chance.

SanMarco added 09:10 - Jun 14 He was involved in the one undoubted (and only) highlight of our season - denying Abu Dhabi the quadruple!! Like so many of the bit-part players signed over the past two or three years he showed signs of quality but never seemed to fit in and often looked lost. Whose fault that was we all have our views on. I see no point keeping him if he is on a high wage as he is probably too fragile for the second division. Good luck to him though - he was always trying, even if occasionally to comic effect, and (a bit like Boufal) he rarely scored but when he did they were brilliant....
