The latest stories coming out of East London say that Danny Ings does not want to leave the Premier League and drop down a division, thus a return to Southampton is not on the cards, but is this his agent with a last throw of the dice to resurrect his top flight career.

According to insidefutbol,com Danny Ings is not interested in dropping out of the Premier League, they cite a story on The Athletic as their source.

The one thing that does not seem to be in doubt is that Ings has accepted that his time at West Ham is up, he has started just one Premier League game, back in November against his old club Burnley.

He has come off the bench on 9 occasions and the other 10 matches been an unused sub, so there are no questions about his fitness, he has amassed only 133 minutes of Premier League football with almost exactly half of those coming in that start at Turf Moor and hasn't registered as much as an assist let along a goal.

West ham want to get Ings off the books for the season, they are resigned to the fact that no one is going to match his wages at the London Stadium so it will be a loan deal.

But so far the queue outside their door has been limited to Championship clubs, although the latest report suggests that Wolves are now interested, but this sounds very much like the players agent leaking the story to try and drum up some interest for the forgotten man of the Premier League.

A1079 added 13:36 - Jan 8 I don't see him returning to us and never thought he would - though I could quite easily be proved wrong - I am on most occasions. I never got any feel that he particularly liked playing for us or felt any affinity with Saints other than seeing us as a part of his career and a salary - and for that he is no worse than many but other than if he gets to the point that there is no other option I would be shocked to see him back at St Marys. To be honest I am not bothered either way.

City_boy added 13:50 - Jan 8 I can't see clubs queuing up for him, unless they get him on the cheap and West Ham will want a big chunk of his wages paid. Given how he has performed when he has played for West Ham this season and Villa last season, I think he is flattering himself about dropping into the Championship. We are better off without him after the way he left.

Since he left us he has hardly set the world on fire. We got him into the England camp; since he left he's not even come close. He made a bad decision. Tough. Live with it. Just not with us!!

underweststand added 08:17 - Jan 9 Few can blame Ings for wanting to get the best out of what is - for many - a short career. Saints dumped Danny (as an 11 year old) as they thought he wouldn't make it as a pro. It was a tough way back through lower leagues and he really came to the fore in his time at Burnley along with Jay Rodriguez. A double knee injury kept him out of the game for almost 2 years when many players were at their peak, but he recovered and came back . Those with short memories may not recall that he kept us up in the Prem. for a couple of seasons (almost single-handedly) before his move to Villa. ..and later WHam. Personally, I don't blame him one bit, as success in football is not a lifetimes career. (ask Rooney). Burnley fans - and some of ours - will remember his name with gratitude ans some satisfaction whilst a younger generation will be asking.... .Danny who ?- With his contract-ending in sight his top flight career is at an end, he has to make the best of what's left and can perhaps hope for ...a season or two with a lower league club before he is forced to quit the game. Whatever he may have saved won't last forever, and he may well be unemployable by the time he's 40 (a sad story that has affected many former heroes in the game).

SanMarco added 09:46 - Jan 9 Very charitable way of looking at it underwest. I think the sad story affecting former heroes in the game is 30 years out of date. May apply lower down but for years Ings has 'earned' more in a week than I ever have in a year (prob. year and a half). If he hasn't saved enough for a luxury retirement it is his own stupid fault. There does seem to be a mutual antipathy between Saints and Ings that makes the return unlikely and that is probably a GOOD thing.

underweststand added 11:40 - Jan 9 I take your point (San Marco) and indeed it's hard to disagree with your comment about retirement, but these large sums of money don't all end up in the players bank account. I've heard some " agent's fees " quoted at 20% ...and more, plus the earning aren't tax free either so the amount they see still sounds a lot but it isn't all there's on pay day, and whilst they live in a house worth millions there is still a mortgage after they stop playing. The real problem is .what do you do to invest " big money " ?. There are a few crooks in the investment world, and wasn't there a story - back in the day - that one crook fleeced some big name players for a fortune. I recall Alan Shearer got screwed for 10 million..! Living a life of luxury now, doesn't mean you've got it all for life.
