Sugawara Wanted By Italian Giants Tuesday, 25th Mar 2025 21:08 Southampton are already resigned to losing one full back in the summer, with the departure of Kyle Walker-Peters at the end of his contract, not it seems that they could also be losing another.
Kyle Walker- Peters will leave St Mary's in the summer at the end of his contract after 5 years at the club, although he will leave for free, no one can really deny that Saints haven't got their monies worth.
With rumours that Walker-Peters might have left last summer rife, Southampton signed Yuri Sugawara as his potential replacement and although he initially shone, he like most of those around him soon struggled as the team slipped from one crisis to another.

Now according to football-italia-net that renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano is claiming that Italian club Roma have Yuri Sugawara on their target list for the summer window.
That may divide opinion with Saints fans, but whilst the Japanese International has not exactly been consistent in the premier League, he could well find his feet in the Championship and that was some comfort to Saints supporters who were thinking that Sugawara would be a decent replacement for the departing KWP.
If Saints were to let Sugawara depart then they would most likely demand a much higher fee than the £6 million that they paid back in July, they got him at a markdown and his current value is nearer £12 million at the moment.

With 3 years still left on his contract Saints are not under pressure to sell, the big question and one that needs to be solved for many in the squad before they make up their minds where they will play next season, is who will be manager ?
The vibes coming out of St Mary's are that many are not happy with Ivan Juric and that is who many supporters believe that Juric should be relieved of his duties now, before he does irreparable damage to the squad moral.
One of those that mighe well be happy is Sugawara who has found himself on the bench more often than in the starting line up since the turn of the year and has completed 90 minutes just once in the Premier League since the arrival of Juric.

I like Sugs. Early on his stats were far superior to KWPs. But since Juric's arrival he has lost form as well as suffering a few mishaps!! Both he and KWP have mainly played at wingback although, when not starting, Sugs is usually brought on at fullback. That can't help. I can understand player's unrest. Show some form and you're on the bench next game. Or struggle when put in the wrong position and, hey presto!, you're on the bench next game. Juric hasn't, to my mind, picked our best team. Sugs certainly hasn't shown the form of which he is capable along with many others in the squad. So one can understand the rumblings and grumblings in the dressing room. It's that time of year that gardens need attention! Ivan????

I'm with DellBoyWally on this one. Not sure I would trust him with a garden though. Everything would be planted in the wrong place. At the very least the pretence he will be staying next season needs to be put to bed asap. Players leaving because they hate a manager who is not staying anyway would seem daft even by SR standards. You can bet none of those going would be on our 'love to be rid of' lists - and let's face it those are pretty long... We need a solid base of players like Sugawara for next season. Then all will depend on how SR spend the transfer money. To be fair they just about did enough last time but there will be less cash coming in. Last time we had Livramento, JWP and Lavia. No one of that saleable value this time around - unless Pep has his eye on JS???

To..Dell Boy and San Marco, good points well made, but clearly Juric has problems, too. He's not afraid to experiment with a squad overfull of less-than-standard players that he's inherited from 3 previous managers, and hardly any is in form and Onuachu often ignored. Ivan tries to create a more attacking formation than Martin, (who had no Plan B), but now without 3 of our registered strikers, the line-up often changes from game to game. As this thread is about Sugawara, I also go along with your comments and although he looked good at the start, the pace of this very demanding league has shown that he hasn't the stamina required of a 90 minute Prem. player, but not to say that he wouldn't do well in the less frenetic Italian league. He rightly needs a move, as he joined a Prem. side in August, and with Japan already qualified for the World Cup, he won't want to play in the Championship and lose his place in their national squad. The humble fee we paid for him will surely be doubled / troubled if he moves abroad to a top club, and rightly so. This may be the first of a series of similar articles (from Nick), as I can see that those players who want to move away, may also be joined by those who, for one reason or another, won't fit the bill for next season.

Blogs 31 bloggersKnees-up Mother Brown #19 by wessex_exile February, and the U’s enter the most pivotal month of the season. Six games in just four weeks, with four of them against sides also in the bottom six. By March we should be either well clear of danger, or even deeper in the sh*t. With Danny Cowley’s U’s still unbeaten, and looking stronger game on game, I’m sure it’ll be the former, but first we have to do our bit to consign Steve ‘Sour Grapes’ Cotterill’s FGR back to non-league. After our shambolic 5-0 defeat at New Lawn, nothing would give me greater pleasure, even if it meant losing one of my closest awaydays in the process. What’s the excuse going to be today Steve – shocking pitch, faking head injuries, Mexican banditry or some other bit of sour-grapery bullsh*t? Southampton Polls |
