Another Ex Southampton Hero Linked For Return To St Mary's
Wednesday, 17th Dec 2025 09:15

The return of Orio Romeu to the club boosted the morale of Saints supporters, now it looks like another legend could be on his way back to the South Coast to try and recapture former former glories and help Southampton back to the Premier League.

Of course with the January transfer window now only 2 weeks away, the silly season is about to get under way and rumours are starting to fly around thick and fast.

The latest Saints one comes from footballleagueworld.co.uk who are reporting that Saints are interested in bringing James Ward-Prowse back to St Mary's.

As we know, when Nuno Espirito Santo took over as manager at the Hammers, he had history with Ward-Prowse from their time together when the player was on loan at Nottingham Forest.

That all went sour and then Nuno Espirito Santo arrived at West Ham JWP must have known that he had no future at the club under him.

If he was under any illusions that the slate would be wiped clean, they didn't last long, It’s understood that the Hammers’ new boss had informed Ward-Prowse that he is no longer of use to the club virtually as his first task at the club and the Ex Saints players has not featured in any of West Ham's first team squads since the managers arrival at the end of September.

The problem for Ward-Prowse was that with the transfer window closed, he was effectively handed a 3 month break from football, it is unclear with which squad JWP is training with, I would doubt it is the first team squad, but he has not made an appearance in the Hammers U21 side, nor made the bench for the first team side so it seems that he has been completely isolated.

The news out of the London Stadium is the Hammers want to get rid of the player and free up his wages, the transfer fee will be negotiable, just over two years ago when JWP joined them, West Ham paid around £35 million, however his value has steadily dropped since, but over time it has been steadily dropping, when he joined Nottingham Forest on loan a year after his departure from St Mary's it had gone down by a third to £20 million.

With that being a failure and the loan being cancelled in January 2024, it was down to about £14 million and now after passing his 31st birthday and his lack of football in the last few months it has plummeted further with transfermarkt.co.uk suggesting it is around the £5 million mark.

Both West Ham & Ward-Prowse himself are keen to part ways in January, but as is usual in cases such as this, the stumbling block will be the players wages and how much each side are willing to compromise.

From Ward-Prowse's perspective he will enter the last year of his contract in the summer, he is on a six figure weekly salary at the London Stadium and he will not get that anywhere.

This suggests that this January it will be a loan deal rather than a permanent move, although it could be that the Hammers would prefer a clean break and with his transfer value so low, might be willing to do a deal to get him off the books completely.

It will be interesting to see whether this move happens, James Ward-Prowse himself puts playing time over money and also how much loyalty he has to the club that he played for, for so many years.

However there is sure to be interest from elsewhere and you would think that some of those interested would be from the Premier League and you could understand why the player himself might prefer that option.

Where would he fit in an Eckert team ? Right back maybe

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no! Why do we keep doing this? It never works.. understand Lallana and Romeu for the dressing room and training ground but let’s face it, neither fit to play more than 30 mins. The last thing we need is JWP back, he was too weak for the Championship before we sold him to Wham, so why now?
Get stuffed, we’re not a sodding charity.

I agree with Colburn, there seems to be very little upside to this when JWP would use up valuable financial resources that could be used on other needs e.g. Goalkeeper.

This move might have made more sense if the club hadn’t recruited Romeu but now he is in the door I don’t think we have a place for JWP as well. I don’t see his play being any better than Jander, Shea Charles or Downes. Cam Bragg is also emerging as useful cover and has just signed a new contract.

I wish JWP well and hope he finds the right move, just not at Saints.

If money was what was driving him then he made the right move by any other criteria moving looks a bad decision.

Not sure where he would fit in now, as mentioned above we have 4 good CDM's and he's way too slow to be a wingback. He was a master at just passing the ball straight back to the person who passed it to him as well.

Sorry but I think that ship sailed 2 years ago.

So... it looks like I am the first / only fan to look at this idea in a positive light.
Of course no-one on the present staff knew /understood Prowsey's history with the club.
Unlike many of the signings we had made historically, JWP was always injury-free, covered more ground than most and played every minute in two full seasons in the Prem. and of course those 17 free-kick goals can all be put down to good luck, or poor goal-keeping and can be conveniently forgotten (Oh yes and a list of successful penalty kicks, too).

I do feel sorry for Prowsey. As G. Southgate's captain he played 30 + games at the U23 level
only to be abandoned when Sir G. took over the senior squad and felt the media pressure to choose a "London glamour boy" instead. JWP's departure was his last attempt to get into the prev. World Cup squad when he moved to WHam, whose "then" manager (David Moyes) used his talents well, but successive management changes in a struggling Hammers outfit, saw him caste aside by Moyes' successors...and so it is today. If he returned - where would he play? ..I always felt he was best as an attacking MF, but sad to say Downes has never reached the consistent level we knew of Prowsey, not to mention fluctuations in his health, and a consistent record of yellow cards. Just back from suspension, he picked up another v. Norwich. Too hot headed and likes to argue with refs.

Along with those of us who saw an intelligent, talented footballer(in JWP), over 15 years he had his detractors who vociferously bleated about him, both on here and other sights.

I may end up being his only supporter on this thread, but for the fee mentioned, and his known record of excellence; I do feel we need his experience, if continuing to talk about an "immediate return" to the Prem. We may be scoring goals again (under TE) but there are embarrassing gaps in the squad which clearly won't be good enough at the higher level, IF we get back up.

Now we’re two. I agree, I always thought he gave it his all for us despite what fans think.
If he wants to get his career on track again then drop the big money and play some football.
Think he needs that and we could use his experience

And three. Great player and an excellent role model for the younger lads coming through. Could do with playing forward a bit more but maybe he would in this team. Would have him in the team on Saturday if I could.

No. We the club needs to go forwards not backwards. Much like JWP’s passes.

No! No! No!
There’s no place for him at Southampton anymore. Not unless we want to continually play the ball sideways or backwards. Maybe we could just bring him on for free kicks and penalties. Aside from that he’d be another backward step. We’ve got to move on from the likes of JWP. This may all just be media speculation but it’s already starting to get on my tits!

It’s been suggested that his wages at West Ham are £114,000 a week.

So a 50/50 loan deal would mean Sports Republic shelling out not only a loan fee but £57000 a week for his services.

I can’t see Sports Republic being remotely interested.
