Armstrong And Archer Moves in Doubt As Transfer Chains Breaks Down Monday, 2nd Feb 2026 17:09 Southampton leading scorer Adam Armstrong's move to Wolverhampton Wanderers & Cameron Archer's switch to Scottish giants rangers now look to be in serious doubt collapses in the transfer chain, so it looks like both could be staying. Adam Armstrong looked to have been heading to the Black Country today, but after developments elsewhere it seems he could be having to stay put at St Mary's. He is part of a bigger chain and as reported by footballleagueworld.co.uk They say: "Adam Armstrong's deadline day move from Southampton to Wolverhampton Wanderers has been thrown into fresh doubt courtesy of transfer developments elsewhere. "Amid the Saints' faint hopes of a play-off push, Wolves had eyed a swoop for Armstrong despite their Premier League struggles. "The striker has notched 11 goals and four assists in 29 Championship appearances for Tonda Eckert's men, who are just 14th in the second tier despite Saturday's 2-0 triumph over Stoke City. "Adam Armstrong's move from Southampton to Wolves thrown into doubt as Jean-Philippe Mateta deal collapses "The Southampton forward's potential move to Molineux sat at the bottom of a chain of prospective transfer deals, with AC Milan previously eager for Crystal Palace ace Jean-Philippe Mateta, and the Eagles keen on Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen. However, as reported by Sky Sports, Mateta's move from South London to the San Siro has collapsed.
Following those developments, Sky football correspondent Rob Dorsett posted on X: "With Mateta to AC Milan now dead, concerns that the striker-chain may collapse. "At the moment, our sources saying CPFC still want to sign Strand Larsen for £48m from WWFC (has now completed medical) and Wolves still want to replace him with Adam Armstrong from Saints. But…." So Armstrong's move must now be in doubt, can Palace afford to now buy Larsen at £48 million without getting Mateta off the books ? Also in doubt is Cameron Archers move to Rangers, the Scottish club now seem to have made their number one target Ryan Naderi of Hansa Rostock who is said to be on his way to Glasgow for a medical.
So unless this deal falls through then it looks like Archer will be staying at St Mary's. On the face of it, this looks good for Southampton supporters, but with change in the air at St Mary's amid rumours of dressing room cliques, this might be as so rosy as you would think. It could also put the deal for Canadian striker Cyle Larin, this morning we were assuming that we would be down to just 3 strikers by this evening, Ross Stewart Jay Robinson & Larin with only Nick Oyekunle after that, now it seems that we might well have more than we need.
