Tonda Eckert Says He Will Put Out His Strongest Side At Sheffield Wednesday Friday, 27th Feb 2026 15:03 Some Southampton supporters may think that the trip to Hillsborough will be an easy 3 points, but that view is not held by Tonda Eckert who has stated in his pre match press conference he will be playing his full side out in South Yorkshire. Saints now have 4 away games in a row, 3 in the Championship and 1 in the FA Cup, but although the trip to already relegated Sheffield Wednesday is on paper the easiest of the fixtures, he is not being complacent and will not be resting any players. The Daily Echo has been at this afternoon's press conference and here is what Tonda had to say.
Do you need to manage your squad tomorrow? Rest players? TE: We're going to put a full team out. Injury-wise, nothing's changed from the last game? TE: No, we're looking good. The squad is looking good, and we'll go as strong as we can tomorrow. Have you taken stock of the progress you've all made? TE: I try to learn every single day, head down, and keep working. We need to keep going. Are you pleased with how you're doing? TE: You can ask me that at the end of May, but for the very moment, head down and keep working. And what about the plaudits? Does that mean anything to you? TE It's just nice to get some confirmation for the work that we're doing along the way, but that doesn't take us anywhere. You know how it is, me and myself, we have to prove ourselves again and again, and we need to keep going forward as a football club. I think that we are in a good moment right now, but you know how quickly things change in football. I think now is not the moment to step back and reflect on what's happening, but just to stay on the gas. So good news from the Saints camp is that we seem to have no new injury worries, although Eckert wasn't saying if any of those currently out with injury will be back in contention.
That means Jay Robinson & Welington and both will need to fight for game time when they return, Welington was in fine form leading up to his injury, but Ryan Manning has also made some major contributions since getting back into the side. It will also be interesting to see just what he now considers his strongest line up, some of the positions pick themselves, but there is competition in others, so will it be Ross Stewart or Cyle Larin, Kuryu Matsuki or Tom Fellows, and finally Shea Charles or Caspar Jander. The main thing though is that we get the job done without any drama and come back from South Yorkshire comfortably with all three points.
