Saints Have To Sit Back And Watch The Championship With Fingers Crossed This Weekend Tuesday, 3rd Mar 2026 08:46 Southampton travel to Fulham on Sunday in the FA Cup, but back in the Championship there are some crucial games affecting Saints chances of promotion, so on Saturday all we can do is cross our fingers, so here we look at who is playing who. The good news though is that we cannot lose ground on Wrexham in 6th place, they are themselves playing in the FA cup where they host Chelsea, so whatever happens over the weekend we will finish no farther away from that last play off spot in terms of points total. Indeed we might have a chance of a bit of a psychological boost with Hull City on 60 points facing Millwall on 62, perhaps the one result we don't want to happen is a Hull win, that would push them above the London club, if that was to be the case, then surely both would be too far ahead of us to catch, even with our game in hand.
However if Millwall win, although it would put them out of sight, Hull would be just 7 points ahead of us and we would have a game in hand, catchable and even a draw would suit us. Ipswich face Leicester City so you would expect them to win that easily at Portman Road, so I am not considering the Tractor Boys as catchable as they start the weekend with two games in hand on us. But we can be caught by the two clubs behind us, three technically, but Bristol City would need to beat leaders Coventry by 8 goals, to overtake us on goal difference.
The two clubs behind us are Derby County and Watford who are both two points behind, a win for Derby would take them above us, a draw would see them a point behind, so the job for them is clear. Derby are at home to Sheffield Wednesday, so you would expect them to win that, ironically Ben Brereton Diaz could play a big part in a victory and jump above his parent club in doing so. Watford don't have a game this weekend so will stay where they are for the moment. So all we can do is sit back and keep our fingers crossed, there are always those that will say we can only do what we can do, that is true, but we need results to go for us elsewhere, every team does, so we could do with a helping hand ahead of two away games in a row in the week after.
