Play Off Spot Now In Southampton's Own Hand's
Wednesday, 11th Mar 2026 08:35

Last night saw a number of results in the Championship that were quite favourable to Saints chances of making the play off's, but one key fixture meant that the pendulum has suddenly swung in Saints favour.

Southampton started yesterday 4 points behind 6th placed Wrexham, a promotion play off spot was not in their own hands, but the Welsh club's defeat last night to 5th placed Hull City has done Saints a favour, although it has made the chances of catching Hull much less,

But now Southampton's fate is very much in their own hands, this morning they are still 4 points behind, but with a game in hand, that if won this evening against West Brom, would see us move back into 7th place, but only a point behind Wrexham.

Of course mathematically if Wrexham win all their games and we do, then they would finish above us, but that situation cannot happen as we have to travel to the Racecourse Ground to play them, one team or in the case of a draw both will drop points in that fixture.

But the fact now is, that if we beat Wrexham and win all our games then we would finish above them and in a play off position.

So for the first time we are now masters of our own destiny, although there is still a long way to go to ensure that we achieve the target of a play off spot.

But the pendulum could swing back in Wrexham's favour this evening of we fail to beat West Brom, we have put in a lot of hard work, we now have to ensure that we don't tail off now.

Three points this evening would put us right up there with Wrexham and they will be looking over their shoulders and see us just a point behind, we have put in a run of wins to get in this position, we now have to keep going and truly make us favourites for that last play off place.

Around us though, the other teams who themselves harbour hopes of pushing themselves into the top 6 suffered set backs, Derby lost at Millwall, Watford could only draw at Sheffield Wednesday, Bristol City lost at Leicester.

As I say the pendulum has swung a little in our favour, now we have to make that small swing a gigantic one !

atm looks like it's going to go to the wire. Our extra FA cup fixture is going to have some effect as it now displaces 2 key games to midweek.

We must keep Stewart fit and try to get key player suspensions out the way ASAP We are now going to see the benefit of having a big squad and also Tonda's good work in keeping everyone in the squad on board by short rotations.

Hopefully it's going to be an exciting end to the season. Which is a big step up on last year.
