Southampton At Coventry City The Preview Friday, 13th Mar 2026 08:43 A vital game where it is even more important to pick up a win after the disappointing result at relegation threatened West Bromwich Albion, but it will be a tough ask to beat a Coventry team who are heading for the Premier League. Tonda Eckert knows that if his Saints team are to be promoted then it is at the moment a case of overhauling Wrexham, as it stands going into the weekend we are 3 points behind the Welsh club, but with a superior goal difference and having to play them at some point in April. That means that promotion is currently in our own hands, but will it be by the end of Saturday afternoon. We will know our task tomorrow by 10 pm Friday night as Wrexham face fellow Welsh club Swansea City this evening, the Swans looked good for most of their 2-1 win at Portsmouth in midweek, so this result is a foregone conclusion, however if they were to beat Wrexham they would jump above us in the League for at least around 16 hours. We would have games in hand over them, but it illustrates how compact that the Championship table still is in the top half. But Wrexham are the prey we are hunting down and so a Swansea win is preferable to one by Wrexham, but a draw would also be a good result. Knowing our task in hand will hopefully help Tonda Eckert to focus his squad after their lacklustre display at the Hawthorns, this will be a tough ask for a win, but we cannot afford a defeat.
But our cause will not be helped by the growing injury list, Leo Scienza looks set to be out for a period after pulling up with a groin injury on Wednesday at West Brom. Also Ross Stewart could be a doubt as he is still suffering from what Tonda Eckert describes as "Stiffness" that kept him out of the Sheffield Wednesday game and saw him come off at half time at the Hawthorns. This could mean a start for Cyle Larin after his late equaliser against the Baggies. But it is the Leo Scienza who is the worry not just for this game, but also in the coming weeks, however it is a problem and not a disaster, Scienza's contributions have been very good this season, but we have experienced replacements. Scienza has scored 6 times in the League and has 8 assists in his 30 appearances, however Sam Edozie with the cross for Larin's goal at West Brom showed that he could well be a good replacement and two years ago he made a significant contribution to our promotion campaign with 6 goals and 3 assists in 32 games, although a lot more of his appearances were off the bench than Scienza's.
We also have Tom Fellows, who although a little out of form, could benefit from playing on the right and cutting in and hitting shots with his strongest right foot. So even without Scienza we will still have 3 wide options going into this game and hopefully Jay Robinson will return from injury soon. Another change that Eckert might make, although not enforced, is whether to bring Caspar Jander back in place of Shea Charles who was out of sorts on Wednesday.
So we can go into this game knowing that we still have a competitive strong squad that will have options off the bench. This is an important weekend and we have to be up to the task, our focus has to be on leaping above Wrexham, but as I have mentioned there is a chasing pack behind us that is a bit close to comfort, so it is important to keep ahead of them. The West Brom game was clearly affected by the euphoria of the win at Fulham, hopefully we are over that now. In truth we have struggled to break down sides that sit back as the Baggies did, that will not be the case at Coventry who will be more on the front foot.
So this will perhaps suit us better, we can sit deep and go with pace on the break, the loss of Scienza is a big blow, but we can cope, whether that id Fellows, Edozie or Matsuki who will be the hero of the hour is yet undecided.. But the pressure is also on Coventry or rather perhaps off them, with a 9 point gap between them and 3rd place after 6 straight wins, they have the finishing line in sight, however perhaps we can capitalise on this, teams in this position often take their eye off the ball as they get nervous. They have put in a great run as pressure from the team behind them, but now that pressure has lifted, will they still have the adrenalin rush that having to win a game brings. We in contrast do have pressure on us to keep our unbeaten run going and hunt down Wrexham, by kick off time on Saturday, we will know the task ahead, we may be 6 points behind the Welsh club and need a win to keep up, or we may be just 3 points behind and knowing that a win would take us into the top 6.
Tonda Eckert will be able to focus his side whatever happens this evening in Wales. At least this season hasn't petered out as some predicted it would, we have something to play for and as we have showed in the last week indeed last month or so, that this side doesn't give up to the final whistle goes. They keep going and a game is never won, lost or drawn till the ref blows for full time. Saints fans have learned that it is folly to leave a game early with Tonda Eckert's team, the 3 goal rule that some apply, when if the team goes 3 goals down they leave, was smashed at Leicester and although that was a bit drastic, we are a team that is feared by our opponents in the final minutes. A difficult game to call, but at least we can go into it with not only something to play for, but a good chance of getting something. There were many who would not have expected this to be the case when Tonda Eckert took charge at QPR on the 5th November last year, now with a manager of the month award to his name how things have changed under his tenure.
