Yet Another Big Week For Southampton !
Monday, 16th Mar 2026 11:16

When you are fighting for something in the League, be it the title, promotion or even relegation, you have to break things down to little segments and keep building on that and the next two games are crucial for Saints.

If we look at the 5 game segment of the season that was February, it was a very pleasing month, yes the draw with Charlton was disappointing, but the other 4 games were wins, so 13 points out of 15 was a good month, that pushed us to the edge of the top 6.

The first two games of March have started well, ok the draw with West Brom was disappointing, but the win over Coventry was both unexpected and crucial, in truth we would have taken 4 points from these two games, we just didn't expect them to be in that order.

Now we come to a crucial week, having turned the season around and put promotion into our own hands, we have to push home the advantage of being the inform team.

With the international break coming after the weekend, the next few days sees ourlast Championship action of the month and what a psychological advantage it would be if we could finish it sitting in the top six.

We could be in that position by Wednesday evening, on Tuesday night Wrexham travel to Watford and if they lose that game and we beat Norwich City at St Mary's then we would go into the top 6 on goal difference.

But whatever happens it is imperative that we take all 6 points from our two games this week and keep the pressure up.

Saturday see's Wrexham visit Sheffield United and that will be a tough game, it will be a test of Wrexham's mental strength, as will indeed Tuesday night as they know they cannot afford to slip up.

But it is not just Wrexham who are looking over their shoulders at us, Hull City are only 6 points ahead now and we have a game in hand, the Norwich game on Wednesday being our catch up fixture.

If we win that we could in theory also overtake Hull, although given that they are hosting Sheffield Wednesday, that is unlikely, but they cant play the Owls every fixture, so by winning our two games, we would then be just 3 points behind them.

So a big big week for Southampton at St Mary's and we need a packed St Mary's to roar the team on.

However at the moment there are still over 3,000 tickets available for this game, given that most of them are only £30 for adults, surely with a fan base of the size we have we should be selling out this one and indeed Saturday against Oxford.

There are of course some who will have good excuses for not attending this game, work, finances, personal reasons, they are going to perfectly valid for some who can't attend.

But for most it will be about not bothering on a Wednesday evening.

I will take some stick for saying this, but am I wrong ?

I would say not, but in May if we celebrate the 50th anniversary of our first ever trip to Wembley in 1976 with a return in either the FA Cup semi final, dare I say it FA Cup final or more likely the Play off final as in 2024, there will be those now desperate to see the team play who will rue missing out because they don't have enough games on their account.

The team beset by injuries for the Coventry game dragged themselves through the game to achieve a monumental win helped by the backing of the travelling Saints supporters, the injury situation will not have changed, they deserve to see a packed St Mary's on Wednesday to spur them on, not chunks of empty seats.

The away fans have done their job at Leicester, West Brom, Fulham & Coventry, now is time for the home fans to step up to the plate.

Promotion is won mainly by grinding out results on a Wednesday evening at home to the likes of Norwich, we only have 6home games left, we need full houses in each of them, end of no excuses !

We're on a long unbeaten run, putting pressure on those in the play-off places, playing effective football, yet still on the day before the game, we have very nearly 3000 unsold Saints seats at St Marys! Where are the missing supporters ?
You can be sure of a clamour for tickets for Arsenal....

yes it's frustrating to know we still have 3000 unsold tkts, but, we're not alone - that team 19 miles down the road are, thankfully, in a relegation battle where every home game is key, yet still they couldn't fill their much smaller ground last night.
We also have to acknowledge that for a lot of people, especially those who get tkts on an ad-hoc basis, there are fans finding it a difficult financial climate currently, and with 5 Saints games at home in April may have to curb their preference to be at every game.
