Southampton V Hull City The Preview

A big big game for Tonda Eckert, Southampton FC & Sport Republic as they go into this game having failed to win in the last 6 League games, taking just 3 points in the process, but they go into this game taking a big gamble.

Speak to any Saints supporter and they will tell you what the problem is at St Mary's and whilst all can't be completely right, most come up with at least part of the issue.

My take as most who read this will know is a lack of leadership and organisation at the back, something that has been there for at least the past 8 years.

But as it stands in this game, we have so far weakened the squad in the transfer window and not strengthened it, we have sold Ronnie Edwards to QPR & loaned out Gavin Bazunu to Stoke City, weakened our squad and strengthened that of our rivals.

So we go into this game gambling, in goal we are likely to have a keeper in Daniel Peretz who does not inspire confidence, virtually no experience outside of Israel and having barely played in the last 2 1/2 years, his debut at Doncaster was also hardly inspiring.

Gavin Bazunu might not have been the best keeper in the division, but he had experience in it and had been a big part of our promotion two years ago, we knew what we were getting.

The loss of Edwards on one hand is not great, he barely played, just 11 games totalling 665 minutes, but on the other hand he seemed to have attributes that the other central defenders lacked, pace & passing ability being two of them.

His record when he played wasn't bad, he was a regular under Will Still and of the 8 games he started we lost just 3, the final 3 of Will Still's reign and under Eckert he has managed just 2 sub appearances totalling 7 minutes.

Tonda has tried many different back 3 formations, but never really Edwards and our loss is QPR's gain.

So the big question on the lips of Southampton supporters is what sort of side will the manager put out.

I would be very surprised if Daniel Peretz was not in goal, we seemed to have nailed our colours on the mast on this one and it is a big gamble, if he is not good enough, then we are up the creek and never mind the paddle, we wont even have a canoe.

But the real issue for most fans is the make up of the defence, the general opinion is a back 3 isn't working and we need to switch to a back four.

My theory regarding this is that we stuck with a back three due to a lack of height, most teams have two bit central defenders and a big striker, as we have lacked a big striker under Tonda, if we go to a back four, then we will only have two tall players and we will be very vulnerable at corners and set pieces.

Although we have Ross Stewart back, I would be very surprised if we risked starting him just yet, so if we play four at the back against Hull, we could be vulnerable.

But I do expect us to switch to that formation, if that is the case then the best partnership in the centre would be Taylor Harwood-Bellis & Joshua Quarshie.

At right back Elias Jelert if fit would be my choice, but if he isn't then there is the first issue for Eckert, we are back to playing a central defender in that position.

Likewise the left hand side, the two choices are Ryan Manning or Welington and neither have excelled, although I would give Manning the nod, he has been the better of the two and in fairness to them both, they are not wing backs, they are traditional style full backs.

So if we do play a back four, who makes up the other six in the outfield.

I would say a central pairing of Caspar Jander & Flynn Downes with Tom Fellows & Leo Scienza out wide, with Finn Azaz playing just behind Adam Armstrong.

All five were the star turns in that winning run under Eckert, they have not become bad players overnight, we have to get the system playing to their strengths.

That is Tonda Eckert's big task, get a system that plays to the players strengths, I didn't think that the back three formation was a bad thing, but we did not have the contrasting central defenders who would compliment each other to make it work, or perhaps to the point, we barely used Ronnie Edwards & Joshua Quarshie enough, who between them had the skills lacking in the other three players who were the first choices most weeks.

For me what will be a big factor going forward will be when Shea Charles returns to first team action, he is a big miss.

Hull arrive in 7th place, a run of 4 wins & a draw in December propelled them up the table, however, in the last 3 games they have faltered a little, a good win at Middlesbrough being bookmarked between a 2-2 draw at Sheffield Wednesday and a 1-0 defeat at home to Stoke City.

We sit 8 points behind them and now we go into a week where the direction of this season will be well and truly decided. Betting sites UK are offering odds of 13/10 for the win, 27/10 draw and 9/5 for the Saints to lose.

We start on Saturday with Hull, win that and we will be back up and running, although lose it and we will be at least 10 points off the play offs even if everyone else up there loses.

Likewise the game on Wednesday against Sheffield United, it is imperative that we win both of these games, if we do then we are moving up the table and gaining momentum for the trip to Portsmouth on Sunday week.

Our recent poor form means that we cannot afford to lose any of these games, ideally we would win all 3, but if that doesn't happen, to stay in the promotion race we can only afford to drop 2 points, we have to win 2 and draw 1 as a minimum.

As I said at the start, The club have taken a big gamble this week, they have weakened the squad without strengthening it first, especially the goalkeeping department, they are gambling that Peretz is up to the task when there is no track record to show that he is, if he isn't then what next !

By the afternoon of Sunday 25th January we will know where the future of this season lies and whether it can still be a good ending or whether revolution will be in the air in the fanbase.

Can anyone seriously see us winning the next two home games? There is too much wrong to probably win either, let alone win them both. And Eckert has proved that he isn't the man to do it. He's just Spors' nodding dog.

Whether we carry on with the turgid failed 3 at the back. That we are even discussing Manning still being considered a starter, despite most goals in open play coming from where he was supposed to be. To the Will Still like substitutions. To the Jekyll and Hide like 1st and 2nd half performances. To rolling the dice of one bad keeper to another, smaller, bad keeper. I can only deal with so much self harm and stupid decisions and this season has picked up just where the last one left off.

I'd be happy with a win or even a point in either of the next home games. Though we know what is far more likely

I’ve been a supporter since the 1970s and have seen lots of ups and downs, but I’m now completely bemused with what’s going on at the club. It is crystal clear that we have a problem in defence and simply changing the keeper will not change that. We have scattergun approach to recruitment, with quantity rather than quality being a priority and, with respect, untried or mediocre players replacing those who can perform at championship level.
If we carry on like this, and we probably will, I can see us achieving anything this season, or the next. Fingers crossed I will be proved wrong.

Something tells me that you don't rate Peretz Nick. I'm not at all clear what he's done to offend you though.
Considering the number of players that we've signed in recent years who have promised a lot and delivered nothing I think I'll reserve judgement. However, I suspect that if he plays a blinder, dominates the area and organises the defence you'll probably say that we should have signed a high profile has been for stupid wages.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to the game and hoping your judgement isn't fulfilled.

I will go to the game more in hope than anticipation
I would prefer a back 4 as we started with it at Donny using fringe players My cb pairing would probably be THB and Capt Calamity who in fairness does get a good score on headed clearances Just hope the don't run at him
Remember RoKo dropping Boric unfavourable of Forster when AB hadn't done anything wrong That didn't work out bad and got us a top 8 finish I don't see Peretz anymore of a gamble than that Against Donny I saw him shouting orders,I saw him trying different ways of getting us to go forward .A little gang ho at times but give him a break

Sports Republic and Spors are disasters for our club. Selling Edwards without giving him a fair chance is ridiculous. Selling him to a direct competitor verges on deliberate sabotage. How much more damage can they do ? Still no sign of a fit and reliable tall centre forward that we have needed since before they became involved. Absolutely shameful.

I will give the new keeper a little more of a chance though I agree loaning out Bazanu before the new keeper has proven himself is another pathetic solution.

With regard to your team suggestion Nick, assuming Shea Charles is not fit, I would agree except I would not have Manning anywhere near the pitch.

Hoping for the best but fearing the worst I am afraid. COYS.

Hull have scored in each of their last 8 away league games - and with our defence, whoever plays - you can bet that will become 9. There is no way we will keep out both Joe Gelhardt or Oliver McBurnie, strikers we can only dream of at this level. Add to that a new keeper making his home debut for us who is bound to be a tad nervous and still getting used to his defensive chumps in front of him & we will certainly have our work cut out tomorrow to say the least.

I do not know for the life of me what is going on at my beloved club these days. We are falling further & further behind the play-off places with each passing week & personally, I cannot see us finishing anywhere near them come May.

Sadly, I can only see a 1-2 win for Hull tomorrow - despite rumours of Hull's considerable injury list. Cue yet another miserable weekend in the life of us long-suffering Saints fans... something we're becoming used to this season and last.

Hull ( apparently) have only 12 fit players (13 out) but most likely a few young lads on the bench looking to make a name for themselves if / when they come on as subs.
Hull have 4 wins in their last 5 , and Saints (overburdened with fit players) ...haven't won a league game in the last 6 , but are still unbeaten in last 5 at St. Mary's.

Remembering that we lost 1-3 at Hull (with Adam A. getting a consolation in the 94th minute) and we had 14 shots (to their 11) and despite us having 71% possession !
- I mean what could possibly go wrong this time around?

The only bright note is that ...Will Still's 13 games won us just 12 points. It's now 13 games with Tonda at the helm and we've gained 23 points from his 13 matches. Unless we can pick 3 wins from remaining January fixtures, talk of a play-off spot sounds only.. hopeful.

IanRC, it’s not sabotage by Sports Republic but in my opinion just another page of their business playbook.

Their priorities are, again in my opinion, in order of importance :-

1. To be a Player Trading Business.

2. To be a Hospitality and Entertainment Business based at St Mary’s.

3. To be the day to day management of Southampton Football Club on behalf of the owners.

I personally suspect that they aren’t remotely interested as to in which league the football club competes, just as long as they have an ability to showcase their young prospects with a view to selling the odd successful one at a profit.

I have always felt that overall your comments and observations were reasonable in the main but to put Manning as a first choice full back or wing back is quite frankly totally wrong and out of step with the vast majority of supporters.
To have a strong view after one game of the new goalkeeper is premature. You may be right but let us take a breath and hope this works out.
There has also been a lot of discussions recently of multiple club ownership and sporting directors and regrettably our club falls very strongly in this category which based on their poundshop menatality I hold no real expectations for this season and with Hull missing a large number of their first team squad can we hope for a result tomorrow??

In total agreement with Bryan K (above). The day of one-man club owners is past and the multi-billionaire type ownership in the Prem. where several such scenario is not uncommon, to balance the costs of running £ multi-million companies.

One problem that exists is that many of our faithful and beloved fans just don't see the reality of the situation. As a provincial club (which is what we are) many of us abhor the " big London club scene ", even though our geography places us within their sphere.
When the biggest clubs trade players in sums of £40-50 million EVERY window (and now where £100 m. deals rarely raise an eyebrow) our own struggles to find good talents who are capable of improving the squad are more down to luck than judgement.
An earlier point regarding " the power " wielded by a DOF is apparent when it is the managers who get the push in bad times, and not the DOF who oversee the purchase of players and choice of a new managers. I do not criticise Spors here, but looking at the current "overloaded" squad, they are the sum result of purchases made by 4 or 5 sacked managers...(or is it 6 ? ) most of whom have changed the playing formation(s) used by their predecessors, leaving good players (who don't fit the pattern) out in the wilderness.
