Southampton V Coventry City The Preview Friday, 19th Dec 2025 09:35 It's the biggest game of the season so far at St Mary's with the League leaders arriving and Saints needing to get back on track after last week's set back, what is not to like a virtual full house and a toe to toe game, this is why football supporters go to matches. Make no bones about it, this is the biggest game of the season, forget playing Portsmouth, that is just about local pride, this is a game with something on it, we are playing the best team in the division in terms of league position and it is a real test of Tonda Eckert and his squad. So can they meet it head on and come out of it with all three points, if they do then it will be a big step forward. Even though we have won 6 out of the 8 games that have been played by the team under Tonda Eckert, the defeat at Norwich once again brought out some of those who will never be satisfied until Sport Republic have gone, the Worlds richest man owns the club and we are top of the Premier League with 3 Champions League titles to our name, but even then there will be those who will say it should be four.
Whilst I appreciate the right of every fan to have their own opinion and express it, sometimes you have to give a situation time to develop and the criticism on line aimed at Tonda Eckert was a a minority, but uncalled for, the German had won 6 out of 8 games, a run bettered by few in the Championship in that period, yet that was still not good enough for some. Luckily football not just about ranting on social media, it is about going to games, supporting your team and enjoying the experience and that is what Tonda Eckert has given back to us, "Enjoyment" he has turned round a team in complete disarray under Will Still and turned the season around, maybe we won't get promoted or maybe we will, either way we have our pride back and more importantly our enjoyment of watch the team play open attacking football.
The Saturday before Xmas is traditionally a game where the crowds drop a little, the expense of the festive season means that those who might normally go to a game, have to give it a miss, so it is pleasing to see that there are only around 650 tickets left in the home areas, so by the time the game kicks off it will be a virtual full house. The next good news is that Saints are likely to have a full team for this one, Tom Fellows has recovered from the injury that kept him out of the Norwich game and that will be a big boost, his ability to run with the ball has been a big part of our resurgence under Eckert. So from a team perspective we will have a strong squad,, the only regular player who will not be available is Shea Charles and he is now back in training, but the important thing for this weekend is that Tom Fellows is back.
Who know which way this game will go, we can speculate all we like, but all we can ask is that the team plays as it has in the last 8 games, if it does then they have done theirs and hopefully the crowd will respond and make it one of those matches to remember. The Saints supporters who have attended home & away have been superb this season as they were last season and indeed the season before and now we can all step up to the plate again, Supporting the club doesn't mean that we can all be stood in the Northam Red Wall and standing up and singing, we all just need to support in our own ways, make a little bit of noise if that is your way. At any football club, it is the supporters that matter, a club is nothing without it's supporters and it needs to be a two way relationship, however for big games like this issues with the club or owners are secondary, we should all want one aim, a win and 3 points. If you want to learn about a club who truly have had bad owners and been badly run, then speak to a Coventry supporter, their issues started when they were bought by SISU Capital in 2007 and then endured a 16 year old period under their ownership that saw them lose their ground and have to play at Northampton at one point.
Only by the grace of God were we not owned by SISU, they were in advanced talks to buy Saints and were only blocked by Rupert Lowe who although not on the board of the club at the time was a major shareholder and refused to back the bid, therefore leading to SISU to go to plan B which was Coventry City. Lowe has a bad reputation amongst Saints supporters and is now an MP with some controversial views, but not everything he did was bad and whisper it, but this was one thing that was good and where if he had backed this bid then God help us. So it is good to see Coventry City on an upward trajectory again, I have to admit that in the 1980's, 90's & 00's they were not my favourite club, probably because for a large amount of the time we were in direct competition with them, mainly in relegation battles. But we go into this game a long way behind them in the league, but although they are top , in the last 8 games since Tonda Eckert has taken over our records are almost identical, they have won 6, drawn 1 and lost 1 and we have gained just 2 points less having lost 2 rather than drawing one of our games.
They are more advanced than us in their set up, but we are now showing the quality that we have in our squad and only Middlesbrough and them can boast a better record in that 8 game period since Tonda took over. So make no mistake in terms of recent form, this is going to be a match between 2 of the top 3 teams in the Championship, we want to be the one with at least the second best record over the last 9 games and maybe the best by the time this weekend is over, beat the Sky Blues and that will be the case.
