Southampton V Oxford The Verdict
Sunday, 28th Dec 2025 09:11

This was not a good day at the office for Tonda Eckert and his Saints squad, in truth this performance was as bad as any under Will Still and the question on most of the travelling Southampton supporters lips, was why ?

When the team news came through on Boxing Day, there were no surprises, this was the eleven men and formation that had won some great victories in the previous couple of months and surely they would get back to winning ways at managerless Oxford who sat in the bottom three.

In this verdict i am not going to dwell on the individual incidents in this game, but concentrate on where we are going wrong.

Some will say it is the formation, but I agree with Tonda Eckert that is just numbers, at Oxford this was very much a back three for most of the game with Ryan Manning and Tom Fellows spending most of the game in the opposition half.

The problem is the make up of the back 3, those that played at the Kassam are just too similar, they do not contrast and compliment each other.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Nathan Wood & Jack Stephens are just too alike, so we had a back line lacking in pace, lacking in mobility, not great passers of the ball, not great at organising and on this day not great at marking.

The balance of the back line is not there and it is square pegs in round holes, it worked in earlier games as teams had yet to suss us out, but now teams like Oxford know they can beat us by purely hoofing the ball forward and that they will catch us napping at the back.

But the main problem is the inability of all three of those at the back to pass the ball quickly, if they have to pass the ball quickly and more than 20 yards, then they don't have the confidence to do so and often put their foot on the ball and we drift back to the nightmare days of Russell Martin and pass it endlessly along the back line.

Defensively we are all at sea, Harwood-Bellis is the natural central player, but is out on the left, his inability to pass the ball quickly left Tom Fellows isolated for much of the time.

Nathan Wood is in the centre, but he has struggled in recent games to win the ball when it is pumped forward, too often he is beaten in the air when dealing with a high ball punted down the field.

Jack Stephens on the right is as he has always been, neither fish nor fowl, he is too short to play as a stopper in the centre and not fast enough to play out wide both in terms of pace and ability to pass the ball, although in his defence he was better than his two companions in the defence.

It is not the formation that is the problem, but those playing in it,as we pushed forward in the second half at Oxford it was painful to watch Harwood-Bellis try to push forward down the wing, not his fault he is just not that sort of player.

The solution is simple with the players we currently have, either we revert to a back four, which I don't think is the complete answer, or we utilise the players we have to make the best of a back 3.

That means putting Taylor Harwood-Bellis in the centre, that is his game, winning headers and stopping balls punted down the centre, man marking a central strike.

To his right I would have the overlooked Ronnie Edwards, he has mobility, he has pace, he can defend, but he can also overlap on the attack, but he can also pass the ball better than others in contention.

To the left of him I would have Joshua Quarshie, he has strength, he has pace and again his passing is better than the others.

If we are going to play three at the back, these are the best option in my opinion, if only because they offer contrast and there different strengths compliment each other.

But more to the point it offers not only better defensive options, but better passing options and that is the critical issue with our game in recent weeks, we just aren't passing the ball quick enough from the back line.

We are pedestrian, especially when the opposition press us quickly.

But at the heart of the problem is a lack of leadership on the pitch and especially in the back three, the actual named Captain changes from game to game with Tonda Eckert seemingly rotating Jack Stephens every other game.

To be blunt your Captain has to be one of your best players, he has to be a constant in the team week in week out and that is not Jack, the problem is who else would you have ?

There is not an obvious leader in the team, some might say Oriol Romeu, but it is clear that he is not going to start many games this season.

Adam Armstrong leads by example when he Captains the side, but I think a Captain has to be in the centre of midfield or the defence.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis if played in the middle of the defence could be an option, he is now experienced enough and the responsibility could well stir him on to greater things rather than weigh on his shoulders.

An outside bet would be Shea Charles when he returns, he has Captained Northern Ireland and again it could spur him on.

But if I am honest I think we need to bring one in to the club in the January transfer window, surely there is someone out of favour in a Premier League squad who is out of favour and could do a job in the Championship on loan.

At Oxford Tonda Eckert and his side got it badly wrong, but that does not mean that it is terminal, we have had a bad run and have some tough games coming up, but we have the squad to deal with this, we just need to get back to basics and back to what we do best, this is a test for our manager, we will now truly find out how good he is as a manager.

I've often wondered why the only footballing centre back we have can't get a game?A lot of teams are now sitting deeper and pumping balls behind our wing backs, dragging our ponderous CB's out of position and leaving big gaps in the middle.
The other issue with our back three is ball watching, we are weak on balls into the box because we watch the ball and lose the players. I personally would like to see a back four, problem being we don't have a right back!

what more is there to say? Either Tonda got it wrong, or the players just didn't respond.
From a team that averaged 3 goals a game, now we're suddenly struggling to score once.

Scienza and Fellows are two of the best wingers in the league, but for all the passing and centering they do, there is seldom anyone in the box to finish the job and score. We still need a big striker to create havoc in the box (typ Beattie, Lambert, Pelle ). With the possible exception of Armstrong we haven't had " a real goalscorer" since Danny Ings left.

Noted a quote from Paul Onuachu ( 11 goals since his move back to Turkey) who said that his team played to another formation that suited him. Surely that's not rocket science?
The current back 3, may put on a show individually, they don't click together as a unit.
Sorry but Flynn Downes is very in-and-out and already got 2 more yellows since coming back from suspension, and Armstrong and THB are already on 4 yellows (!)
I think TE is doing the best he can ... but the squad is still lacking as they've now been "sussed" by opposition sides and we need a new approach, but few obvious alternatives.
Let's see what the transfer window can bring...

I have previously stated this manager needed an experienced sidekick as he has persisted with the same setup and same personnel week in week out.
I had hoped not to join the obvious cries of same old same old but this display against Oxford was dreadful and places us in demonstrating that the Russell Martin formula is alive and kicking and totally agree with Nick that persisting with Wood and Stephens ensures tippy tappy is alive and well.
This Manager needs to understand the large majority of fans will not accept this dire style of play, plus a lop sided 3 at the back with two wing backs that one is wasted (Fellows) and the other (Manning) is god awful at defending.
Please get the balance right Mr Manager or the knives will be out just like your predecessor

Can't fault Bazunu for the first goal but the second was yet another far post howler. McCarthy is weak on the near post and Baz is weak on the far post. So it goes.

Agree on the defence; Bring Bree back at Xmas. I accept that Tonda didn't want to change a winning team but in the data driven world of football, teams have now learned how to play against us. I really won't understand the reasoning if Edwards remains out in the cold.

Like the idea of changing the back 3 and bringing in Edwards and Quarshie. Not sure I agree on Edwards having pace though.
Personally. I would like a back 4 with proper full-backs with Fellows, Azaz and Scienza behind the centre-forward. Would keep the opposition pinned back a bit more and we might have players that will actually stop their wingers crossing the ball.
And Bazunu has to be dropped/sold/loaned out. Awful keeper who is again, statistically the worst in the league he’s playing in.

I posted early in Tondas reign that I believe that certain players are dictating the style of play and are not being directed by the coach I still believe that One possible answer is to bring in a tough guy assistant for Tonda
I agree with Nick's back 3 of Edwards THB and Quarshie and remember Edwards won QPR player of the season by playing in M/F doing what THB is being asked to do when we dominate
Again I'm with Nick on the job of captain THB or Charles Both have experience at various international level
I know it's a busy period and players need to be used wisely but the strongest maxim is "one game at a time" If we had won at home vs Coventry and away at Oxford as we should have done those extra 5 points would have allowed him to rest some for Brum and go again for Millwall
Internet rumours are linking us with another cb and a goalkeeper but also with losing Edwards

Saturday was the absolute pinnacle of a display that’s been years in the making.

Couldn’t even get a point against Oxford, whose players nobody outside of Oxford has ever heard of, played at a ground with only three sides.

For season after season the Owners and Sports Republic have done absolutely nothing to address any of the basic problem that exist :-

1. We need a centre forward who has physicality and can hold a ball up.

2. We need a centre half who has physicality and will win headers and defend as if his life depended on it.

3. We need a proper goalkeeper who commands his box and will play every game.

Given the above a manager can fill in the gaps around the spine, without it we can all look forward to an ever increasing number of “ Oxford” type results in the back waters of English football.

It's worrying that over the last few games have followed a similar pattern. From what I've seen of goals conceded we don't have any CBs who are reliable, can mark or win headers in the 6 yard box. As mentioned above our 2 keepers faults complement one another.

At the moment we're a mid table club owned by lower European club owners with little serious ambition to do little else than make money for their shareholders. No matter where we finish this season expect our best player to leave in the summer. Followed by another half hearted rebuild (i.e. a few potential youngsters seemingly bought at random not for the benefit of the club but profit for the board).

The only way a can compete in the top flight is by spending tens of millions every season AND buying strategically based on what is needed for the squad. SRs will not do this.

Completely agree with Nick.
You look at our disappointing results and there is a common theme. Stephens has come back into the team. Norwich, Wrexham, now Oxford. As captain should he not be the one dictating the back line, ensuring a quick dynamic player stays back to prevent the break which didn't happen for Oxfords second?
Our defence is too similar trying to do the same thing, which is why when Quashie comes in it shows a slight improvement.

Teams have now worked us out and keep it tight and wait for the error, we just run out of steam around the 60th minute. They've also worked out that up from Azaz can't hold onto the ball.

Goalkeeper, Commanding CB, strong attacking midfielder and physical sticker needed in January.

Get rid of every player that played a vital role in Russel Martin tenure , rebuild with what we have bought

Can I feel another managerial change coming on - yes, if our slide continues into the bottom three. This whole scenario is becoming a repeating nightmare. Even the three recent bright lights are dimming by each game - Azaz has virtually stopped performing and Scienza and Fellows have ceased to run with the ball - and these are good players. Our attacks are mind-numbingly boring in respect of build-up and that stems from the defence being negative or not mobile enough. I can't see us even reaching the play-offs and am I the only one wondering that, with more and more championship games being available to watch on tv, it might be time to seriously consider giving up my season ticket and, if I have to watch such dross, then in the warmth and comfort of my home or local social club might be more appropriate? This is so disappointing.

We need more predictability at the back and less predictability in the attacking end. A 4-4-2 can provide this presently.

I agree entirely about the back three Nick. I would however definitely give Shaea Charles a chance as captain when you returns from injury. It is painful watching really talented players like Leo Scienza being starved of opportunities because the back three are so slow to pass the ball forward. For me therefore it would be Quarshie, Edwards and THB with THB in the centre.

mushinexile added 20:54 - Dec 28
WHY? Because Stephens seems to be a troublemaker and if he isn't selected he sets the team off against the manager LIKE HE HAS DONE BEFORE.
Sack the useless c unt for gross misconduct.

The problem with the formation that sports republic want to play is that it leaves a weak midfield and space down the wings for the oposition to run into. Also it gives the maanager far less options to adress dynamic changes in the game.
