Crowd of less than 25,000 looming for play-off semi home leg
at 14:30 13 May 2024

I am bothered because I want to see good quality football. The Championship in general is cack, and our output has not been much better than average.

But I did like what Tessem had to say about Friday’s game, if you are not going to shout and scream for the team, give your ticket to someone else who will. I did plenty of shouting and screaming during the last two seasons before we got relegated. If they were a team of battlers, I might be tempted, but they aren’t are they? Mostly they turn up and work through the numbers. I am over it, that’s all.

Perhaps McCarthy isn’t so bad after all or is Bazunu just a poor goalkeeper?

This. The daft backpassing put him under uneccessary pressure.

£15 is overpriced if it is based on entertainment value. I am deeply disappointed.

West Brom v Saints Matchday Thread...
at 16:18 12 May 2024

In Norway, they have a joke, “ Hat happens when the stupidest person in Norway goes to visit in Sweden?”

Answer, the average IQ of each country goes up.

In a similar vein, any of the 4 teams going into the PL next season will reduce average match skills and entertainment.

Three teams that got promoted are straight back down
at 12:05 12 May 2024

I agree your assessment regarding form. I don’t agree about the parachute payments. There are real world costs for relegated sides, redundancies, squad shrinkages to be avoided in order to compete. If clubs are left to manage without, their squad quality will suffer. Making the better sides as denuded as the average ones will simply make it harder for any club to get into the PL and stay there. Brentwood took several seasons to get up, and still struggled.

We’ll have to see what happens to Ipswich.Plenty of promoted sides have been up at the top of the PL around Christmas, then sunk like a stone.

One of the things that any team getting into the PL has to be able to do is defend well. No matter what style of play, a poor defence will invariably lead to lots of losses. Man U are probably the biggest exception, but it has cost the best part of a billion on attacking players to keep them in the top half.

Promoted teams cannot spend that kind of cash, and if they do, it will come back to bite them in 2-3 seasons, if not sooner. As mentioned, PL clubs will be selling their assets over the summer to avoid sanctions.

Survival will always come on a base of good defending, otherwise you will just get slapped around, with best aspirations to be only a yo-yo club as mentioned.

Bazunu may not be as bad as some think. The line in front of him is very shakey, and he is under instruction to pass the ball out to players that we know don’t know what to do with it, except pass it back. But we do need another good keeper.

Last season, Burnley conceded 35 goals, this season, so far, 74.
Sheffield Utd, 39 vs 100
Luton 39 vs 78

This season, Leicester conceded 41 goals, vs 69 last year in the PL
Leeds 43 vs 78
Southampton 63 vs 73.

If we win the playoffs, our defence, which is clearly far inferior to the rubbish one we had in the PL is going to be an excruciating watch. We are in no way prepared for the PL, and under this manager, will never be.

Point 4 sums it up. The “best” squad in the Championship, some decent loanees, a shambles ending. We will struggle to get any good players in next season, permanent or temporary. And there will be less money to go round no doubt.

Manchester United given a helping hand to the final, now there’s a surprise.
at 18:25 23 Apr 2024

This just smacks of , “They deserved it so they should get it.” One of the early complaints about VARwas that it was too accurate and took too long to make a decision. Nobody is saying that the VAR official cannot make a mistake, and there have been cases where it was provable that they did. No such evidence has been presented in this case, other than “a boot is not the body” ( what cobblers), and most of his body was level. ( so what, some of it was offside). The emotive “toenail” was raised by a disappointed manager of the losing side. It did not take long by modern game standards. I thought Coventry were the better side by far, but they didn’t take their chances, and were unlucky at the end. That is the way it goes.

Offside is offside. The VAR check would have been made in any event no matter what clubs were involved. Nothing to do with the FA, PL, referees union or anything else. Offside is offside, and it is one of the things that VAR CAN be relied to get right. Everything else would be waffle or bias. Tough on Coventry though.

I have just had a reminder from Faceache, 4 years ago, at the beginning of Covid, the club was calling all over 65s to make sure they were OK. I can’t imagine that happening now. Not after the way they ignored the recent passing of a significant player for the club.
