I love Christmas time, lot's of things I miss though, carol singers, Salvation Army and local band playing christmas songs in the streets on a cold evening, down the pub on Christmas morning(wearing some stupid jumper) seeing friends that live away that are home for Christmas, raising a glass to family members no longer with us at Christmas dinner, snooze in front of the TV whilst watching an old favorite film I've seen 30 times before.
Christmas is a lovely time of the year, a time to count your blessings, a time for reminiscing of times past, remembering times and friends from the past.
What's a matter with you, you grumpy old gits.
BTW. all the family have set a limit of around £10 for each others presents (no young children to buy for).

With the greatest respect flash,one doesn't need Christmas to reminice over any of those things.
Christmas is a time of loneliness for many and all the "fun" simply makes it worse. At this time of the year,deaths in the family are felt most keenly and the festive season especially New Year is one people are glad to see the back of.That is the reality for many.
Personally,I detest Christmas and frankly it annoys me greatly that anyone feeling this way is seen as a misery/doom merchant etc . It is exactly like telling people to cheer up and stop moaning when they have Clinical Depression.

Last Christmas was absolutely awful for our family, a lot of uncertainty, not knowing if it would be her last, so we decided to celebrate rather than dwell on what may happen.
Thankfully we had fantastic news a week last Wednesday, so this Christmas celebrations in the Flashberry household will be even more special than ever.

When my children were very young and I wasn't earning a big wage, the way i used to look at things was; stuff your expensive holidays and flash cars, I worked my nuts off all year to see the smiles on their faces on Christmas morning, I would have spent my last pennies to see it. I still spoil them rotten now that they have grown up. Also got a grandson, he gets as much as my two ever did as well.

No is the answer, but I can see why people do.
I really dislike what Christmas has become. The community spirt, spiritual significance has almost completely disappeared and it’s been replaced by what is an over commercialised marketing exercise designed to part people from their hard earned.
I grew up in a working class family, money was tight and my parents worked very hard to give us kids the best they could. Christmas was a special time spent with family, elderly relatives came over on Christmas Day and we played games and cards and listened to stories of yesteryear. As I grew up, my outlook changed and I always worked so that the guys with kids could have time off. When I had kids of my own, my outlook changed and I really enjoyed Christmas, seeing the look of happiness on their faces when they opened their presents. These days, I am more of a grouch again, my wife though is totally different. She loves it and watches Christmas films in September!
Christmas is a difficult time for lots of people, the old, the lonely and those who don’t have a great deal and we try to help others who are less fortunate. A couple of years ago, the mother of a friend of our youngest had a terrible fall and suffered very serious injuries to the extent that the kids had to perform CPR. After being released from hospital mum returned home, but she was unable to work, unable to drive, money was tight and as they lived in the country were relatively isolated. The kids knew they wouldn’t be having much for Christmas and had pretty much told their class mates. Junior and wifey bought some presents for them, Wifey also contacted the local council who have an annual Christmas present appeal on behalf of less fortunate children and families and was able to secure a few more presents. They drove up to the friends house, dropped a sack of presents at the front door, rang the bell and scarpered. To this day the recipients don’t know who was responsible for the gifts, but they were very moved by the act. I will be donating a gift to the council collection this year, hopefully so that another child will get that special feeling on Christmas Day. There are plenty of families out there who don’t have a great deal, some are decent and some not so, but kids can’t pick and choose where they grow up.

As with age as most here, not bothered with xmas it's for the kid, as a child in fairness to my parents they did well for me and my sister, always one big present (not to expensive) and lots of smaller ones, we'd wake up and there was always a stocking at he end of the bed with some fruit and sweets and little tid bits in it, I kinda carried that on when my kids were young.
One abiding memory i do have was that there was always a shedload of booze under the stairs!! crates and crates plus bottles of every spirit imaginable, not forgetting the obligatory bottle of sherry lol.
still to this day I enjoy a small glass of it xmas night.
My kids now though however spoil their kids rotten, it's their choice, for me now at 5 grandchildren and counting, whilst Ii can't afford to splash out loads on the, the reasonable amount I do give them each can still mount up, plus factoring nieces and nephews, not a lot becomes a lot!! I don't mind though, we tend to chuck change away into jars all year long which goes towards our xmas food and drink although we don't really stock up on booze as if we fancy a drink the shops are virtually always open.
This year however we have significantly less change stashed away as we've hardly used cash what with covid and that, seem to be always paying by card these days |  |

I'm not a religious person so that side of christmas doesn't mean much to me, having said that I have been to midnight mass (not a catholic either) and I enjoyed it.
Like others on here I was brought up working class, and my parents worked bloody hard to provide presents at christmas - some things new, others second hand but I loved it.
I am fortunate enought to be comfortable financially but still stick to a budget with my kids. This year we will end up spending a bit more than normal as I have decided to get them chromebooks, partially as a christmas present but mainly because it is likely the kids are going to spend time this year at home due to covid and these will help them with their studies.
I tend to enjoy christmas as it brings the family together, we tend to do an open house on christmas eve where we invite the neighbours in for a drink to celebrate, around midnight I put the turkey in to slow cook overnight and when we get up in the morning there is the most wonderful aroma throughout the house.
Once presents and dinner is done, we light a fire, play board games, and relax with a liberal amount of alcohol.
This year unfortunately will be different due to covid - I think a lot of people are going to struggle this year, many more people will spend christmas on their own and I think we will see a major spike in cases of depression. | | | |

Totally agree, NYE is a horrible time. Christmas mornings, seeing our sons face light up, the awe in his look at the presents and the "evidence" Santa had been, half eaten mince pies, glittery footprints up the stairs leading to his bed....we went the whole hog too. Including the emails and videos from Santa on the PNP app. | |
