In a strange twist of events l found myself in conversation with a young lady who had attended Layer Road for a match against Hull City in our first season in The Championship. The 5-1 encounter.

We were attending a promo evening for a band called The Datsuns in North London in 2008.

During the evening she explained that she had been present at a party that made the national news due to the tragic death of someone by the name of Mark Blanco.

The incident occurred in December 2006.

This incident will be shown on Channel 4 on Monday night at 22.00 in an hour long documentary and several people known to me have made contributions.

It may be of interest to some.

I am very much hoping that the police will reinvestigate the death of Mark Blanco as a result of what will be included in the content.

I know that what l was told by this young lady 15 years ago has been instrumental in the making of this documentary.

My 'chat up' lines had mixed results in the nineties but l had worked out that you might as well just go for it.

I discussed with my Polish friend what l would devise as a plan and he xxxxxxx loved it!

I approached a pair of BB's and mentioned my friend and they looked across at him. They remained standing in the same position which was a start.

Then l came out with the killer lines and their eyes were lighting up.

I said..... 'English men one meat and two veg but Polish man made different below.

Polish man had two meat but just the one veg'.

That did the trick. Three hours later they were back in Colchester.

We kept up the Polish thing until the next morning.

My friend spoke virtually no English that night ....other than 'Jiggy Jiggy'.

( Dayton, Ohio....you did say anything 😊😊 ).

Barn House, Pebmarsh 1993

'The strange case of the disappearing sausage'

My good friend Peter had invited me to a Bar b on a hot summer night in the Essex outback.

I was wifeless and he said 'Bring someone'.

I only had about 48 hours notice to find someone to invite.

The 48 hours soon became 24 as l was busy in Kentish Town.

One of the people l socialised with at the time is likely known to some of those who are following this thread.

Enter the one and only Jeff Harris ( R.I.P. ).

Jeff and l had enjoyed some success when teaming up and bamboozling females with utterly bizarre conversations.

On the Friday evening before the Bar b we entered Roberts Wine Bar in Crouch Street, Colchester and there was a very impressive array of local females present.

In particular there were a group of three young ladies who had jetted in all the way from down town Wivenhoe and we somehow managed to hold their attention for in excess of half an hour.

There was one female in particular who looked like she would be an ideal partner to invite to Pebmarsh the following evening.

Jeff was on top form and had the other two eating out of his hand and intrigued by his left field conversation.

Fast Forward to Pebmarsh around 24 hours later.

I have arrived with the third of the group from the previous evening and she has an eye for fashion.

Peter called me aside and said 'You've done well there, where did she spring up from?'

I said 'She sprung up in Roberts Bar last night'.

TBC ( 😊😊 ).

There was a very decent selection of fine foods on offer in Pebmarsh.

I spotted a large juicy sausage an arm's length away and managed to prong the beast on my fork and draw it towards me.

I wasn't the only person to have my eye on the prize sausage but just as l attempted to take a bite out of it the thing dropped from my fork, rolled down the table and onto the ground.

The fact that the sausage had landed on the ground was no deterrent to sampling it.

I got down on my hands and knees and had a good look around.

Nothing.

My Wivenhoe guest looked too.

It was nowhere to be seen.

It became a topic of conversation and something of a mystery.

It was still a great evening.

On the drive home my guest said 'That was really strange about the sausage, is Barn House haunted?'

We went back to my house in Colchester and l put on my new coffee machine and some music.

Then my new found girlfriend asked me for a slow dance in the kitchen.

Slow dance was all l could ever manage and l wasn't much good at that.

She had her head on my shoulder and we were moving in slow circles.

Then the big moment arrived.

She saw it.

The sausage.

It was in the turn up of my trousers!

1994, Colchester.

It is a Wednesday night. I have arranged to pick up my friend Jeff Harris and we were headed for King's Nightclub in Copford.

On arrival at Jeff's pad on Lexden Road l find him dressed as a cricket umpire.

White coat. White hat. Black trousers. Brown shoes.

He really looked the part.

He even had six stones in the coat pocket to keep count of any balls delivered during play.

He also had two sets of stump bails with him.

He has been watching the test match on television during the day and was a fan of renowned cricket umpire Dickie Bird.

I can't imagine anyone going to a nightclub dressed as a cricket umpire anywhere in the world. Not even an actual umpire.

Jeff was a one off.

Once inside Jeff hit the dance floor.

He was signalling fours and sixes in rhythm with the music but other than myself l am not sure if anyone picked up on this. He also made the correct signals to non existent scorers to signify any no balls or wides that he may have called.

He approached the DJ and asked for the screens to be moved as a bowler was coming around the wicket.

The DJ didn't understand the request.

After a few more brandy's, and although still in his umpire's attire he morphed into a strike bowler and was appealing for caught behind the wicket decisions and a few LBW's.

A few hours later we were in Crouch Street getting a burger.

I looked round and Jeff had disappeared.

Didn't see him again until the weekend.

He had woken up on the Thursday morning still in his umpire gear in a large builders skip in Butt Road.

Time was when l became obsessive about someone like you
Coming through into the sanctuary of this inner space
Rapacious
Thriller
Killer in lace

Skin sin
Heady scene in the edited dream

Come a little closer said the jailer
Watch the trailer while l slowly undress you
You won't notice a thing
Stay fanatical
There's a picture in the supplement
All glossy
Sultry and seductive

I once had the pleasure of meeting up with Irish comedian, Mr Frank Carson on occasions during our involvement with Colchester United.

Frank was a very funny man, perhaps even more so away from an audience or a television screen.

If Frank was still with us l would have forwarded 'The Strange Case of the Disappearing Sausage' to him as l think he may have appreciated that this scenario occured in a real life situation.

I never tell jokes. I have however run 'Sausage' past a few family members and friends in the past couple of days and it's lovely to see people's reaction.

It even made a friend laugh yesterday who is very much dead pan for most of the time.

I did write a series of football comedy sketches that were for the most part based on true stories but perhaps too controversial in places.

They are hidden away in a draw somewhere.

CHLOE JAMES - First draft

Chloe has
An eye for fashion
Likes to paint
Pitter patter
Colours shapes
Moons and zooms
Reference points
Around the room
Studies books
On social matters
Attends Yoga
#Hashtag Action
Self induced
Scenes of passion

I watch her
Busy scrolling
Ironing clothes
Slowly folding

I am likely termed
A closet stalker
In her tracks
A shadow walker
I am sick
And l am sordid
Watch her undress
I feel rewarded
Every time
That she delivers
Through these blinds
I shake and shiver

What if
Chloe knows
That l am watching?

And this
Is all an act

What would
A police investigation
Determine?

Entrapment?

That l have been
Set up?

And how would
All this appear
On '24 Hours in Police Custody'
On TV?

Would the public
Side with me?

Or throw away
The key?

( I suppose 'Chloe James' equates to speed writing....hence l refer to it as a draft. I had a few words ( eye for fashion ) from a previous post....a Pulp word style in my head and it just spilled out on it's own....oh, and the reference to '24 Hours in Police Custody' refers to Monday's programme ).

This may be of interest to anyone looking to write a book.

The average number of words required for an adult fiction book in the English language is in the range of 70,000 to 120,000 words.

When l began writing this thread l didn't anticipate it going much beyond a few thousand words - if that, or in excess of half a dozen postings

The approx 100,000 words that it consists of could be curtailed as the intro sequence is repeated on the 17 sections as per the website layout and a few parts could be edited.

We printed this out from the Leeds United Fans Network which it had somehow landed on, along with that of other clubs around the country....l think this includes Bristol Rovers, West Ham, Queens Park Rangers, Stockport County and several others.

The postings average out at about one a day over 14 and a half months. Some days there may be four or five postings, and for three weeks there were zero.

'Tigers at Layer Road' became a self project as it went along.

It's helpful putting this kind of content together as it stimulates memory and can be used as a reference point for any possible spin off projects.

I wonder if any of the other contributors to this site have considered printing their work out?

As with MySpace l learned that large bodies of content can disappear and are not retrievable and as a safeguard l like to have hard copy.

I should add Iron Maiden to the contents list a few postings back.

With the 50th Anniversary approaching of the band l have had enquiries from Mexico and Spain for information about the work on the logo and graphics from the summer of '77.

These two contacts were received in the past couple of hours.

ADVANCE APOLOGY

I have been asked to bring a few poetic pieces forward from way back on this thread and should anyone wish to reproduce them in Student magazines or any such publication please accept this as authorisation to do so.

SAVING A LIFE

Always thought
That l was born to save a life
Maybe yours?

Some guardian angel
Appearing out of the mist
By the Audi dealership
In your darkest moment

A luminescent being
With the third eye master plan
Reading like a script
From a television play

You will do all in your power to resist
But l....l will not be deterred
Not this time

You see,
Something happened while you slept
I watched you for four hours
All those little movements
Hand clenched
Unclenched
Some indecipherable incantation at 3.35am
Ten minutes later
You turned towards the wardrobe
Momentarily opened your eyes
And kissed me softly on the cheek
In your half sleep
Our first physical contact
And maybe the only physical contact
That would occur
While l was doing everything l could
To save your life

FRIDGE DOOR

Opening shot
Hand opening fridge door
Pan into yoghurt
Sound
Stiletto on ceramic
Silver switch clicks
A flick of blonde hair
Reminiscent
Of the first move
Captured
Between Kentish Town
And Tufnell Park
The same hand
No ring
Clasping
Veins slightly protruding
Face obscured
But a flick of blonde hair at Archway
Skin
Eyes
Texture
Then for a fleeting moment
Symmetry
Power
Engineered by Gods
Delivered by Angels
Highgate
Eyes fixed downwards
The thought of that hand
Turning the pages of a book
Stirring Coffee mate
At midnight
Gesturing at dinner parties
In East Finchley
Its warmth at night
Its coldness in December
In black satin
At The Adelphi

DIRTY BLONDE AT THE CASH MACHINE

Your dirty blonde hair
You're everywhere
I'm here
Seemingly nowhere
Tracing your moves
On some satellite tracking system
Following all these thin yellow lines
Running across the screens
Telling me that you spent
12 minutes at an address
Somewhere near the Tesco's roundabout
Doesn't tell me the street number
But l can guess

Your dirty blonde hair
You're everywhere
Standing in the kitchen
In your unmatching underwear
Throwing paper darts
At the washing machine
Last night's vodka and nicotine
A live fuse in the slipstream
And l'm here
But only just
Occupying a space near the tumble dryer
In your line of fire
Somewhat unnoticed
A living ghost
That just walked on to your private set
Trying to get close

It's been days now
Since I've been trailing in your shadows
Taking you
To vandalised payphones
In the dead of night
Listening to your anguished pleas
Watching your moves in rear view mirrors
Your dirty blonde hair
Getting everywhere
On the car seat with your takeaway NescafΓ©
Your compulsive addictive state
Putting me in a compulsive addictive state
Realising that somehow and against all the odds
You were capable of putting her
Out of my mind
The irony being
That you were rescuing me from my demons
While l may never be able
To rescue you from yours
Despite it all
In my mind
Rehearsing killer lines
Your heart beating next to mine
For longer than 40 minutes at a time

All your possessions
And all your worldly goods
That seem to amount to nothing more
Than 2 carrier bags
And that stuff that you
Carry around in your pockets
Tainted with the scent of freedom
Bring it here
Your dirty blonde hair
Your white skirt
And your Next shirt with the ripped collar
That transcends fashion
Don't go back to that run down b&b
Not now
Not ever

SHADOW PLAY

Your psyche
Wielding its way
Up the staircase
Onto the landing
Bathes in the sun rays
Diffuses scent
Splays ten years of memory
In the microbe dust atmosphere

Some lurid pose
Virgin bitch
Whore goddess
In swirling musk

Biker speeds off in shadow world
Blasting rock leaking fuel
The kebab shop angel calls
Six digit cab numbers
Debris decorates the day
The headset still playing
On the spot where he lay
Talk to me baby
Rise up and walk away
Think of us in that shabby bedsit
Getting high on cola and love
Fish and chips off newspapers
The run down pubs
A utopian heaven
If only....

If only we could tell them

The ambulance arrived
The skies all florescent
The earth pulsating
Lifting us above the hollow
Mourners pouring out their grief
From the tower of St. Stephens
The colours of the flowers beneath
Lighting up this drab town

I'm coming round again
To see you in all your glory
In the cracked mirror
By the sash window
Above the kerb and the gutter
Where it all happens
The dog ends and the beer cans
The slaughter of the innocent
Want you to be the one
That l remember in ten thousand years
Clear as yesterday
Clear as now
Your head jerking backwards
Honey milk fusion
Moving dynamics
Shadow play illusion

Heard about twenty five layers of paint on some car
Saw the loose change in your coffee jar
Know where l would rather be

Press yourself against me in this film
In the cut the skies are all florescent
Push yourself against me in this dream
The beginning and the end
And everything in between

AEROPLANE SEATS

I'd not heard from you in a while
Then.....'Hey, it's me...'
You could appear anywhere at any time
On television once at a Greenpeace demonstration
Just knew it was you
The kick boxing gave it away
Your eight stone five pound frame
That has graced many a festival dance tent
Then one night on the radio
When l was driving back from London at midnight
News of a group of people
Laying in front of a missile carrier
At an air base in Somerset
Blocking its way onto the A361
I knew you would never miss out on an opportunity like that
But the real killer
That l was to hear about three months later
As we sat on some aeroplane seats
You and your friends took from a 747 during a refuel
Was how the guys blew up a six million pound fighter plane
Just 100 yards from security

We spent three nights at your sister's semi in Lowestoft
Ate pizzas and listened to 'Cavelleria Rustincana'
You took barbiturates, they seemed to make little impression
And we got a call to say we were being watched by MI5
You, so dismissive saying 'Who gives a xxxx'
And l dread the day when l walk into a room
And you're standing there smoking in the way that you do
Listening to 'The thrill has gone' by BB King

SYNAGOGUES AND COFFEE SHOPS

From the summer of your discontent
The flicker of your eyelids
Your last tenner spent on gravel
And you're watching it all through mesh
Fizzing on your lips
And licking your way to stardom on txt
Pixel projection effects
And the enhanced colour of flesh
Followed you through synagogues
And coffee shops
In the long afternoons
Saw the other showgirls hanging out
In the basement cafes
Killing lines and killing time
Out on the blue horizon
Waiting for the fog to roll in
Getting lost in some misty heaven
Missing presumed dead
The childlike way you squeezed the blackcurrant carton
And drew from the straw
In the alleyway where the gas lamps used to stand
Played right into your hands
Your soft face hardened by city rain
Your flame, the blue ice gaze on the casting couch
That day they said blue blood was dripping from your mouth
Can still hear the fridge buzzing on the landing
The whirring of sirens out on the ring road
Stuck pins in you
And detected two heartbeats as you murmured in Urdu
Your heart four months in a pawn shop
The fog coming in from The Humber
And you slumber on a reclaimed mattress
In a boarded up end terrace
Shriek, taking it deep
They put you to sleep
Watching it all through mesh
Defenceless

SEARCH PARTY

And l will fire coloured flares
Up into the night skies
From the Orwell bridge
That light up the Euro Park
A one man search party
With your picture around my neck
Laminated for protection from the elements
Even though this may all be in vain
Some fait accompli

I will trawl the taxi ranks
Kebab houses, drop - in centres
And 24 hour pharmacy
Sit on the bowling alley steps
Out in the rain
Tiger's eyes on a mission in the mist
Lighting beacons
Building fires in multi - storeys
Shout your name through tannoys
In the disused railway tunnel
Where l once saw you injecting
At four in the morning

I will comb the back alleys and empty factories
Till daylight
The cafes, launderettes and subways

In my pocket
The things that you gave me
A PJ Harvey CD
A poem you wrote for me in a crayon
That you found outside your daughter's school
Where you watched her through the railings

And she may never know
Who you are

I have been collating written works from 2001 releases.

Here is one that appeared in 'The Pornstar and the Priest'.

This came from a dream. I wrote it down as soon as l woke up and it was unedited.

Here is another release from 2001 that was published in 'The Pornstar and the Priest'.

I wrote this in the buffet car of a train pulling into ( and in the evening out of ) Liverpool Street Station while commuting to work.

HACKNEY MOON

It's four o'clock
in the high rise

Your body rocks
in the blue skies

The pastel walls
and the duvet

The magazines
and the hairspray

The silence of
the TV chat show

Death in Vegas
on the radio

The sunlight
that kisses you
Softly
on the shoulder

Moments
live forever
but one day
we'll grow colder

Sleep softly,
so very softly silent one

Your star shines
in the East

And the Hackney moon
has come

NB. At this stage l hadn't met the band 'Death in Vegas', that occured in 2005.

Another piece from 'The Pornstar and the Priest'.

NIKE TRAINERS

Mother

Have joined
the Latvian army

We are invading
Tunisia at dawn

I'm taking
A packed lunch

Don't wait up

Tell Chloe
Not to worry

This is
What l want

I've thought about it
For thirty seconds

Can you phone work

Tell them
l won't be in

Not for
A couple of years

If ever

I need a break
From the same old stuff

Day in
Day out

And the Nike trainers
You were getting
For my birthday

Don't buy them

Not just yet
Just in case
Something goes wrong

Which it shouldn't
But you never know

Tell Dad
I won't make
Saturday's match

Or any other
For the rest
Of the season

But to save
The write up's
And the programmes

I can't get
The results
In the desert

You won't be able
To text me

They take away
Our phones
And destroy them
With all the other
Junk that we acquire

And the metal
From body piercing
They melt it down
And make direction signs
And what was l thinking
With the eyebrow ring

It was really naff

I can see that now

But at the time
It seemed really cool

They say they'll
Cleanse us
From all that shite
That we're immersed in
And l won't have access
To nine hundred channels
Which is a relief
'Cause l couldn't
Concentrate
On any one thing
For more than a minute

Sometimes seconds

And that dating Channel

What a load of crap

All those weird people
Looking for love

And do l love Chloe?

I'm not really sure

Which must
Tell me something

It was her body
And her hot tongue kissing

But not her soul
I wanted it all

And will l miss the town

I don't think so

I just felt like
I was swirling around
In a giant dustbin

And everyone
Was in it with me

I know this
Is for the best

I hope you'll understand

Your loving Son

Another piece that was published in 'The Pornstar and the Priest' and recorded as a backdrop soundtrack.

THE CANCER OF THE CITY

Beware
The black eyed
Stranger
Who emerges
From the
Shadows
Her make-up
Smeared
And fading
In the
Twilight
Of the summer
Her posture
Tired and weary
She beckons
For a light
And invites
You back
To her place
In the moonlit
Neon night

And from
Her attic window
She scans
The city skyline
The tower blocks
And the pylons
The police chase
And the sirens
And talks
Of better days
And of friends
She used to know
And slowly
I am drawn
By her sadness
And her beauty
Though she is
Tarnished
And she's
Tainted
By the cancer
Of the city

And in her space
She reminisces
Blows smoke rings
In the air
With visions
Of her mother
And the clothes
She used to wear
And the sounds
Of her sisters
As they played
Out in the rain
In the heartland
Of the city
Before
The missiles came

These efforts used to be circulated around our agency by email on Fridays and forwarded to our other branches around the world.

I don't have hundreds of people to work with anymore, but frequently dream l am back in my lovely glass box office whirling away with magic markers and the like.

And strangely, one is much better paid for writing a single advertising campaign headline that entire books.

Some of the things l came up with were just two words!

Like ....'Globalisation, mobileisation' - and the words were just made up. 😊😊

Strange world. 😳😳

Looking back on some of the earlier work l can barely recall writing it ...

Another one from 'The Pornstar and the Priest', and l suppose it is evident that l worked in advertising during '01.

Bit of a note to this.

I probably wrote that in 2000. The advertising agency l was working for were part of a group with the Mothership in New York.

Digital marketing was where it was at around that time and to short cut setting up a digital department from a cold start our agency bought an entire company who were branded as 'Traffic' and reconfigured the layout of our nine storey building to accommodate the large work force that joined the company.

I recall some very young staff - virtually too young even to drive who were involved writing some of the coding.

The Creative Department of the agency went through quite a change. It was an exciting time!

I had waited all my life to work in an environment like that.

Some years after l left my position there the building was demolished and a twin tower hotel built in it's place.

So the dreams l still have at least twice a month about returning will have to remain as dreams.

Still enjoy them though. 😊😊

Here is something from 'The Erotic Cafe' in 1999.

QUICK NURSE

Quick nurse

I've just had a baby

Get her a nose stud

Make her hair untidy

Bring her a bottle

Of Diamond White

Show her the dummies

She'll meet at night

And when she's hungry

Give her junk food

And when she's angry

Give her attitude

Make her a clone

Just like the rest

Get her stoned

When she's depressed

Teach her to run

Before she can walk

Teach her to swear

Before she can talk

Teach her to beg

Teach her to steal

Show her the way

Tell her the deal

This little baby would be 26 now, l wonder how she is doing?
